His handlers should not have messed with his legs beforehand either. I think what makes this fight so great is not so much the action (though round 1 was terrific) but the fact it was Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns beating the shite outa each other. Plus the buzz pre-fight was tremendous as you alluded to. A favourite fight of mine is Hearns v Shuler. Because IMO it is a textbox way on how to demolish a top ranked opponent. Tommy did not put a foot wrong in this fight.
Hearns v Hagler- lets not forget that Hagler was nearly stopped on a cut(ref let it go on because Hagler was dominating the fight)- I think IF Manny was telling the truth, and Hearns' legs had not been rubbed down plus had the hand not been broken(I know, what ifs blah blah ) then a stronger Tommy might have stopped Hagler on a cut and we would have had Hagler v Hearns II
I don't think it would've mattered if Hearns was more conservative and tried to box more. Hagler changed his style and was WAY more aggressive than usual, all over Hearns like Kobe on a cheerleader. Hearns, in the middle of round 1, tried to box from the outside and use lateral movement and had some success, but Hagler cut him off, got him on the ropes, and by the time Hearns got off the ropes late in round 1, his legs were never the same. I take Manny's story about the leg massage with a grain of salt. As for my favorite fight of all-time, that is Corrales-Castillo I. Beautiful bruality, very good display of in-fighting as it wasn't merely wild swinging and brawling, with an unbelievable and shocking (not to mention controversial) ending. It helps that I was rooting for Corrales and it was my birthday. My 2nd favorite is probably Trinidad-Vargas.
Always like Hagler's response to Steele's or the doctors's query about whether the blood was affecting his sight.... "Well I ain't missing him!"
Hagler didn't actually say that did he? It was one of these phrases that someone else said and it was attributed to Hagler.
Chavez v Taylor 1 Aguello v Pryor 1 Moore v Durelle 1 Marciano v Walcott 1 Ray Robinson v Basilio 1 & 2 Frazier v Ali 1 Barrera v Morales 1 & 3 Castillo v Corrales 1 Leonard v Hearns 1
Ali vs Frazier I. Two undefeated champions in phenomenal shape. Two opposites; one loudmouth and one quiet champion. One boxer vs one swarmer.
Louis-Baer Trinidad-Vargas Tyson-Holyfield I & II (I always watch that second fight hoping that somehow I end up in an alternate universe and Tyson doesnt bite Evander and I get better closure). Lewis Rahman II Frazier Foster Ali Frazier III
The closest thing I've seen to that type of blatant bias by a ref is during Brewster-Krasniqi when the ref actually stopped the count at nine, and waited for Krasniqi to get up. I've read some opinions though where people thought Welsh just panicked.
