In light of TBooze's "what was i thinking" thread i thought what was your best picks of an upset. TFFP has his Pac over DLH that he never talks about for some reason Lately i had: Cintron Vs Angulo Booth Vs Moran (seems good on the boxing league) I'll add more when i think about it i doubt there will be more though
I made £240 when putting on a tenner for Holyfield to beat Tyson at 24/1.... I picked Watson over Benn And in an inside job, that everyone who knew boxing, was in on, I made a bit watching Jon Thaxton flatten Scrap Iron Ryan.
I had money on Eubank beating Benn the first time round. I was waiting for Holyfield - Tyson to get some money down. I liked Holyfield a lot and figured he had the beating of Tyson. Tyson went and lost to 42-1 outsider Busty Douglas out in Tokyo. By the time they finlly did 'get it on' I wasn't really following the sport so much and missed out. I'm almost crying when I read that I could have got 24/1 ...
:scaredas: i can't even think of a bookies putting money like that on again. Not a bad list Watson over Benn is also a nice one.
The truth is, I knew Holyfield had a chance, but still figured Tyson to win. But any one on one competition between two world class operators in a sport like boxing, is not a legitimate 24/1 scenario. I know other factors go into to making odds, but even on his then poor form and Tyson's perceived good run, Holyfield was no worse than a 5/1 shot. As for Benn/Watson: I saw Watson/Lee show and Benn/Logan show live. After watching them, it was a no-brainer, it was just a shame I was not old enough to bet.
Holyfield at 5/1 is great odds in todays market. I've went to bet on boxing a good few times but the odds are always **** poor you need to put a good bit of money on someone to get anything back.
Things like boxrec help the bookies too, and with more markets open and virtually every fight you want, having odds, Bookies are a lot more boxing savvy in this era. Take the draw; it was nearly always a 33/1+ shot 20 years back, but if you look at the stats, it tells you a draw happens I believe once in every 15/16 title fights (it may not even be that high), so now you get what 12/1 on a draw?
I had money on Winky Wright to beat Felix Trinidad which doesn't sound too adventorous now but was very much in the minority at the time.
Just checked UFC 100 Mir is 13/8 to beat Lesnar even though he already did it. Could never see them odds in boxing
