I put a tenner on Holyfield to beat Tyson, not because I really thought he was going to win, but because he was much better than a 24/1 shot. In a similar vein on another forum I had a 'gimmick' where I spent weeks telling everyone Danny Williams was beating Tyson. The more reasoned the argument for Tyson, the more fierce I got for Danny. I knew he did not have a chance, but it was fun. And then come bell time, I got my spoon ready to eat that humble pie that was coming my way for the nest week or so, little did I know I had become a god!
I was absolutely convinced that Margarito was going to ruin Cotto's party and his (assumed) ascension to the pound for pound number one spot in the Summer of 2008, what with Floyd 'retired' at that stage. I was never as impressed with Cotto as most others, and after seeing him almost blow the Mosley fight and get discouraged late on, I began to feel that Margarito just had his number and was going to out-tough him. I've called longer shots than that, but maybe not in a bigger fight where so many people cared. Of course, the revelations concerning Margarito the next year leave some doubts over it in any case.
I would of bet my life on Pacquiao against DLH. The oddsmaker for that fight should have their brains checked.
Bet my coworker 20 bucks that his beloved Marco Antonio Barrera would be troubled and lose when he came up against this quick, unorthodox southpaw named Manny Pacquiao back in late 03. Pure luck. Hah
I actually had a gut feeling Vernon Forrest would beat the then p4p number 1 ranked Shane Mosley when they met. Something about him being also unbeaten, his height and reach advantage plus having an amateur win over Shsne made me think he had a huge chance. As a big RJJ fan I had a bad, bad feeling going into Jones-Tarver II that Roy’s run was going to come to an end. He struggled the first fight but the thought was he’d be better prepared and win comfortably. But I just thought Roy’s legs looked gone in the first fight whenever Tarver bothered to press him plus Roy had been at the top for a long time and had plenty of miles under his belt. He was due basically. But how he lost and his subsequent decline shocked me. I thought Hopkins would beat Trinidad. Everyone says they did now but at the time Tito was a warm favourite. My tip was based on Tito being shorter (which the Blocker fight aside is the only time that happened to that point) and seeing how shredded and rock hard Hopkins looked in comparison to the pudgy looking Trinidad pre-fight. I just thought Hopkins was too big, strong and skilled for a guy who should’ve had an L against his name after fighting De La Hoya. That said I’ve made some howlers over the years (I’d have bet the house on Corrales over Mayweather for example) to balance things out.
Back then people actually thought Broner was the real deal but I never saw anything special with him. I knew Maidana would give Broner a real whooping going into their fight. Broner already had 3 questionable decision wins and his weaknesses were already exposed. It was only a matter of time and I only wish I made a bet on this fight.
I had a hunch that Sugar Ray Leonard would upset Hagler. He just sounded so confident in his reasoning for coming back and saying how he had been studying Hagler during his retirement and how this was the perfect time to come back. All the confident talk by Leonard plus Hagler having such a tough fight against John Mugabi convinced me that the upset was on.
I had the same hunch. I won't say i raced around screaming it from the rooftops but i told plenty of people Leonard wouldn't be there if he wasn't well prepared and ready to roll.
I picked Honeyghan to beat Curry and remember going out with my mates to the Dun Cow on the Old Kent Road that night & getting stick from them all the way there - they all thought I must be mad. After a late night we listened to the fight on the radio in the car on they way home & I felt very smug as Lloyd took Curry apart...
I know it isn't mine, but My grandad (huge Hopkins fan) never bet against him to lose a fight, and so I'd say it was Hopkins vs Tarver
Fury did beat Wilder, no question. I did not consider BHop an underdog when he faced Tito and couldn't understand why anyone else would. I also picked BHop to beat Tarver, just not quite as comprehensively.
