+++Your British Boxing Heroes From Past+++

    Growing up in mid 90's to early noughties as a kid i must say i was extremely blessed as a boxing fan. I had ITV for big fights like Benn-McClellan and then luckily after a while my dad got Sky and i was able to sample some of the great nights on sky sports and box office.

    Yeah we had Benn, Naz, Eubank, Reid, Calzaghe, Lewis. I'm just reeling names off top of my head but we also had such depth in our domestic divisions around the late 90's and early noughties.

    I remember coming on here and seeing a thread about 3 years back made by HairyHighlander about where certain fighters went to and it got me looking back on those great days.

    Sky was brilliant near on every saturday night you'd have good/great bills but it's these divisions that were special and hold some of my early heroes. They may never of made world titles there own but the fights they were in were special and if they was around now they'd be world champions!.

    I will never forget the LW division and the LMW division which was stacked! sadly the LMW's would never really fight each other with only a few bouts made with Takaloo featuring in most high profile ones against Anthony Farnell and Wayne Alexander.

    The lightweight division really was stacked and had so much quality that it's hard to talk of today's crop in same vein compared to Mickey 'Shaka' Ayres, Billy Schwer and Colin 'Dynamo' Dunne.

    I have great respect for all 3 men.

    Watching that video it just brings back memories of guys looking to punch hard with intent to stop there opponent, no pillow gloves helps! but it's also the mentality these guys fought with. Wayne was one of last real world class punchers we've had on these shores IMO.

    Anyways post your British Boxing Heroes from the Past. Doesn't have to be way back only a few years ago but just like to look back on careers of past fighters rather then present :good.

    What a lovely technician Dunne was, just watching that Jones fight and both were 1-0 going in and the feinting,head movement, punch selection and footwork was very classy.

    His defence as well was really slick in parts there, Such a underrated fighter.

    Good thread, Mand.

    There was great names and characters on the domestic scene in the 90's. A very underrated era.

    I admired Billy Schwer immensely as well.

    I remember the likes of Pat Barrett and Delroy Bryan. Never forget Ryan losing to Chris Saunders. Chris was from the Ingle camp and had all the crew including Naz cheering for him, but he wasn't a typical Ingle fighter and he beat a past it Del Ryan. A lot of us thought Ryan was ganna outbox him with ease and he was a big favourite.

    Bryan was a real trooper, he worked his way up from nothing to win the British title.

    I also have to mention Paul Silky Jones. I was always a fan of his and it brought me endless joy when he won the Light Middle world title.

    Silky never got the best out of himself. He was very talented, good skills and big for the weight, he just fought to the level of his opponents and he wasn't managed right either.

    I remember he was offered a tune up defense against Branco McKart. The plan was for him to beat McKart and fight Winky Wright. The McKart fight fell through and he would never reach the levels of his upset against Verno Phillips when he was just brillient in a fight where he was a big underdog.

    Alexander was a vicious puncher. Speaking of big punchers do you remember Harry Simon in the 90's. He was putting guys to sleep for fun.

    Prince Rodney got me into the sport,he is mates wi my old man and won the brit light middle title a few times back in the 80s.Chris Pyatt who took the title from Prince was another good fighter from that time.Sibson,Kaylor,Cowdell,Daho,Laing,Jones all proper top fighters form back then as well.The 90s were cool as well.I like to look back over old boxing monthly issues and see who was about at the time.The earliest ones I have are from 95/96.I have some ring mags which are a bit older.

    John Thaxton for me. Never quite got 'there' but I was immensely pleased when he crushed Juan Carlos Diaz Malero for the European title. Beautiful shot and past his prime as well. I congratulated him on the shot when I met him post-Froch-Dirrell, and said how I'd always remember him for the great nights he gave us (Scrap Iron; Hatton) and he was a hard-working pro' and a terrific puncher.

    You mention some good fighters.Billy Schwer was a cracking fighter in the 90s Ross Hale and Any Holigan are another 2 from the Brit scene I remember.I can remember Harry Simon as well but not clearly,there was another guy not on the same level mpush mcambi who used to be pretty good as well

    Yep The Viper!. Bobby was exciting with that style meshed brilliantly with Steve Murray who was another class act. The guys like Romanov has a field day with him though due to his flaws. Sadly Bobby sold his titles he lost love for Boxing and become a Jehovah's Witness. I may be wrong but i think he may be back interested in sport again.
    Yep Dunne was a Stable Boys Champion, He ended up down in North London and really lived up to name 'Dynamo'. I remember his fights with Schwer, Clottey where Clottey's trainer had sugar water for him :patsch. Dunne would of beaten likes of Murray and Mitchell for me in his prime.

    Yeah Simon was class as well as names you mention, i remember Winky Wright coming over here 3 times and beating Bingham? Foster Snr and Dodson and remember him fighting Simon in Nambia or South Africa and the fight was scored a draw or to him and then backstage they found out cards were wrong and he in fact lost to Simon. He was good that night and i was a fan so was gutted. Will have to rewatch it i'm sure it's on Youtube.

    Yes and I met the guy after a small hall show in Bradford.He was in the car park chatting to people as we left the venue.

    Some great names there. The 80's were even better, even though i saw more of the 90s i still got told a lot of it through my dad.

    Good to see Daho get a mention. Glad someone remembers him. What a little character he was, one of my ole mans favourites. He use to do some work in the North and saw him a couple of times.

    Daho was hugely popular back then, good little tv fighter. He gave a good account of himself against one my pops other favourites in Barry Michael.

    His stoppage of Pat Cowdell is legendary. Cowdell was past his best, but remember he'd given Salvador Sanchez fits and was ruling the roost domestically. Still a world level operator.

    I remember there was a big TV tribute to Daho when he died.

    BTW on Vanzie i'm never a fan of people who use the race card but he was robbed twice against Earl and something was up there IMO. Once is bad enough but twice is beyond a joke and IIRC it was wider the second time.

    Tony Sibson for me, he was our local fighter and hero. Especially to a 9 year old which is about how old I was when he beat Minter. He was an am at our local club, Belgrave, where my best mates dad was matchmaker and I first went to. Often used to hand out the trophies at the shows.
    Pyatt too.
    Used to like watching Laing aswell.
