Demosey’s too aggressive for his own good in this one. Holmes jabs his face off before laying the lumber more down the stretch, eventually stopping him.

Holmes is so much taller and longer and knows how to use it... I mean, I love Dempsey but come on, this is a terrible fight for him.
I would pick Holmes so easily.

]He was not "so" much taller, Holmes was 6'3", although I see a source for 6'2", & a stupid one saying 5'11" now...
Dempsey is always listed between 6'0" & 6'1".
And a wingspan in a huge range up top 78"-but 73" or 74" seems most frequent-& likely.

Although I agree that Holmes would decision him.

When he perceived an opponent to be far more than dangerous than most, Holmes could option staying behind the jab and playing it safe in the early to mid rounds before opening up and mixing his punches with both hands.

That would seem to be Larry’s best, go to strategy.

However, we also know that if Larry does get hurt he can be drawn into a firefight.

It seems Holmes was somewhat vulnerable to right hands but he also had a great chin.

Dempsey’d best and most relied upon punch was his left but he had an excellent right also.

The written descriptions convey a ferocious prime Dempsey in the early rounds - and we really only have the Willard fight to exemplify that on film.

Not to over romanticise Jack but I think if we had more film of him in his prime, the perception of the true extent of his threat in the early rounds would be more greatly strengthened.

Even Jack Johnson described Dempsey as being a Sabre Toothed Tiger in the first 4 rounds or so - but less effective thereafter - which isn’t to say he still wasn’t effective - just not as acutely dangerous as he was in the earlier rounds - naturally.

If I had to bet my Marmot’s life on it, my $$$ would have to go on Larry - but absolute prime Dempsey’s best window is the first 4 rounds or so and he could potentially wreak some havoc in those nominated rounds.

Marmaduke says Hi to y’all. Don’t let the cute little fella down Larry!

I'd go Holmes based on the combination of size and skill. Furthermore, I'd add that Tunney's jabcentric handling of Dempsey bodes well for Holmes. That said Dempsey was explosive and powerful and it shouldn't surprise anybody if he sat Larry down early. I think Holmes would win most times though.

While I understand people picking Holmes, Larry has a couple of big problems here. 1. He liked a scrap. 2. He might have no choice.

Dempsey wouldn't fight Holmes he was scared of Sam Langford in his own words BTW, and flat out refused to fight Harry Wills.

That tells you Dempsey's stance on fighting black fighters.

And I should clarify the elite black fighters of his era, I know Dempsey did fight some black fighters on his way up but certainly no one elite to my knowledge.

I know Dempsey after he won the title did state he would not fight any black fighters.
