Why would anyone spend the money? They're overpriced, months late with news,'n the writing's pedestrian.
in the late '80s and early 90s I regularly bought The Ring, Boxing Illustrated and K.O - but of the 3, preferred Boxing Illustrated - mainly for its humour.
The Ring is far better than it used to be for making an appearance in British newsagents. It used to be a couple of months behind, now it's a couple of weeks.
I used to get The Ring, Boxing Illustrated and Boxing News religiously, sometimes KO. Now I just get the Boxing News.
I have always got Boxing Monthly since 1996. I have recently been getting many early 90's ones from Ebay. Now and again, I would get KO, The Ring, etc. I also went through a period of buying Boxing News. One magazine I really like is Boxing Illustrated from the late 80's and early 90's. The covers are superb on them. The quality of paper is cheap but the articles are good. I only buy Boxing Monthly these days. Although, I have been getting many old Rings and Boxing Illustrated's from ebay.
The Rings and Boxing Illustrated from the 60's and 70's are great to read though the BI sort of become all about the heavyweights in the mid 70's.
i don't have one now. i was subscribed to the ring for quite a while but after the year end issue I stopped buying it. Any boxing info now I get from websites and any rankings I get from TBRB
I do like reading sites for up to date breaking news......But I get a bit of a buzz knowing I'm going to be walking to the shop to get my new Boxing Monthly every month.
I have a question regarding historical Ring Magazines. Is there a list somewhere that describes the articles that were in each edition of the magazine? I want to buy old editions, but I would like to be able to know what the subject matter discussed in the magazine first. Does that make sense? As far as the thread, I still get the Ring Magazine, but I have become increasingly disillusioned by it.
http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Boxing_Illustrated http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/KO_Magazine Do not click on the cover for each magazine, but the month at the top of them, eg "March*" for the index of the articles featured.
Still get The Ring. I think it is the only US based one left. Actually is pretty up to date on recent fights, although this months issue was about 2 week late as compared when I was getting other issues. Got April issue on 2-14 and didn't get May issue til today (4-3) which pissed me off a bit, but what are you going to do? Actually have been surprised lately by coverage of recent fights that are in the mag pretty soon after the actual fights. Lets face it, the mags are always going to be a little behind. I just have always loved seeing The Ring in my mailbox. I've been getting it so long I remember when it used to come wrapped in a piece of brown paper. Boxing Monthly would be a little too expensive to get shipped over to the states for me. Like Robbi, I have gotten a ton of them (probably over 1,000) off of ebay in the last few years. 60's 70's 80's etc.. (some as far back as the 40's) at probably no more than $2.00 an issue. Can't beat it, but sometimes my place looks like one big boxing magazine, but hey, I'm a fanatic. As far as The Ring, I like the way it is progressing, I know it takes a lot of heat on here, but I think it is getting better. This months issue looks pretty good with a big article on Mexican-American boxers throughout the years.
