What i used to like in BI was that they did a top 50 for the world ratings whereas the Ring just did the top 10.
Oh yeah. Have tons of the old ones. KO, World Boxing, International Boxing, Boxing 85, 85, 87, etc... Shame Boxing Illustrated isn't around anymore.
From 1977 through the early 80's, I bought every boxing magazine I could find on the newsstand. In those pre-internet days, it was really the only way you could keep up with the sport, even if fight results were months old by the time you got the mags. I remember when Pipino Cuevas defended against Harold Weston, the fight was advertised in TV Guide and I anxiously waited to see it. It was on NBC Sports World, the weaker cousin of Wide World Of Sports, and when fight time came, the local affiliate didn't air the program and showed a local fishing show instead! I about put my foot through the TV. My little small town paper wouldn't have any coverage of such a fight so the only way I found out who won was when Sports Illustrated ran a tiny blurb on the fight a couple of weeks later. Ahhh, the good old days.
Apparently, Boxing Illustrated used to pick a fight of the year. I wonder how many were different than The Ring's? Can't find the results anywhere on the net though. I think ESPN or Sports Illustrated has sometimes differed from The Ring's picks in recent years, and it's nice to see no one outlet having a monopoly on how history get's written down.
