Not strictly an action shot but I hadn't seen this photo of Ali and Foreman before.

An iconic photo. Captures in detail the awful damage inflicted upon Big Jess, the significant size disparity and Dempsey practicing his signature bob and weave.

I like this picture. It shows how deft Johnson was in tying up his man in a clinch. Not only does he have Jeffries' left arm tied up under his armpit, but he is also controlling Jeff's elbow with his gloved hand so the arm can't move his arm either way unless Johnson lets it go. Then it looks to me like Johnson's left glove has hooked Jeffries' right bicep between the thumb and the fingered part of his (Johnson's) glove. In this way, Johnson totally immobilizes Jeff's right arm just as effectively as he does the left arm.

This was the style of fighting during this era. It goes a long way to show how adept and brainy Johnson was in mastering the style of the day. Can you imagine how tiring it must have been for Jeffries or any other fighter to try and break loose if the referee wasn't of a mind to interpret the rules to allow him to break the fighters apart? It really explains what was going on in some of the early fights we watch that feature guys like Ketchel, Papke, Klaus, Nelson, Wolgast, etc. Maybe they weren't quite as dumb and inept of some of us think.

Kid - Great breakdown of all the available detail in just the one snap.

Of course such grappling technique in boxing wouldn’t fly today but we can marvel at what Johnson is doing here - in and of itself.

And the converse ease of Johnson’s executions that would ultimately leave his opponents exhausted in their attempts to extricate themselves.

I’ve always felt that the way Johnson fought would be very handy on the street - great coverage of high end grappling and fistic abilities.

    Me too.

Another one that comes to mind is the one in which Muhammad fells George Foreman in Zaire. The expression on George's face as he slowly falls to the canvas - it's almost like he's saying thank you. Check out his face.

Roberto Duran against Ray Lampkin. I’ve got a pic from The Ring May 1994 (not at home so will have to dig it out later) where Lampkin is turning away from a Duran attack. I used to look at that pic before I’d ever seen the fight. The way Duran was attacking Lampkin looked so dynamic, plus it was evocative of the era, the 70s.

But there are loads of pics like that of Duran - you can see the movement in those stills and the dynamism in his offense. He just seems to photograph really well.

That is a great pic but I once read somewhere that that pics not of the actual kill shot, it's just a random punch landed throughout the fight.
