Nope. A fair few at ringside had Frazier ahead and Boxing International magazine ran with 3 pieces after this fight- Why Ali won Why Frazier won What's wrong with the boxing scoring system?
Maybe a fight against cooney to show fellow old-timers Norton, young an Lyle how it should have been done?
Frazier was hospitalized after the FOTC and his condition was touch and go for awhile--things were looking grim. Joe took a TERRIBLE beating--(Look at his face in the post fight interviews--he took some pretty intense physical punishment!!) He never again approached the level of performance he had prior to that bout--it took that much out of him. That's why I make the statement "life or death effort"--Joe had to go through hell to win that fight!!
I was rewatching all three of the lads' fights just the other night for the umpteenth time. Never get tired of that - they sure don't make 'em like that anymore! All three bouts were close but - up until the stoppage,I found Manila the closest of all. I had it just about even at the end of the twelfth with Muhammad edging ahead in the thirteenth and fourteenth. Hope all's good with you mate.
Maybe Folley, not only the atmosphere was respectful there, Ali still shows great masterpiece although it's said that he was slowing down there.
From the 60s Cleveland Williams a showcase fight for Ali at his absolute peak. From the 70s the 2nd fight vs Norton because for me that's the sharpest and fittest i see Ali in the the 70s.
Joe Frazier also didn’t look after himself throughout his career - hard sparring, bad habits and getting hit a lot burn you out FAST he was shot after the FOTC and it looked like he knew it, he held on to the title against a couple guys he shouldn’t have fought and hit a banana peel before the Ali rematch that I think he might’ve retired on had he won.
Was Fight 2 the Harry Carpenter version, in which he bizarrely states "This is so much better than their 1st fight"??? Sinatra must have gotten in his way, while taking his photographs for Life magazine. Manilla is still the best for me- i think the fact that both are past their prime, yet put up that contest, make it even better. All good mate, thanks. Everton have won a couple of games, at last, so things are looking up. Hope you're still getting out to your boxing dinners.
I do recall Harry saying that now you mention it. Bless him! Yeah, both Muhammad and Joe went above and beyond in Manila. Funnily enough I'm going to another 'Meet & Greet' this coming Saturday - Michael Watson and Nigel Benn. Met 'em both before individually. Both nice guys to talk to.
Ali-Frazier 3 for me . Even though they were both passed it the action and hearts they showed were amazing. The heat level was 110 degrees. Amazing that those warriors could fight at that pace for 14 rounds with the weather being what it was.
