Bob Sheridan had a good call of Tyson-Douglas. "Look at this, he's knocked Mike Tyson down, we never expected to see this Unbelievable, Unbelievable"
no....that was a low point in boxing commentary. compare top class blow by blow commentary which describes not only the punches thrown but the effect the punches have...descriptive commentary...like i think don dunphy was a master at. fcuking "bam bam bam bam" ??....you serious ?
Dunphy was fantastic; too many to describe. As much as there are many Cosell haters out there, I loved him. In love with himself yes, but...he did love the sport and had many 'quotables' that merit praise. His "down goes Fraza" etc...is all time classic. He used to always say one fighter was turning the other one's face into a "bloody, pulpy mess" You all know me as a Patterson lover. After Ellis won the elimination tourney over Quarry in early 68, he put his new WBA champ belt on the line against Patterson in Stockhom in Sept. of that year. I was elated that he got the shot but was a little scared as well (I didn't know how much my hero had left) I was 15 at the time and watching it on a Sat. afternoon 9-14-68 on WWOS. After two 'feeling out' rounds, Jimmy hurt Patterson in the third early and again with an uppercut (you've seen it). Starting the 4th, Patterson reached deep and became the aggressor. Here's Howard: (and I'm paraphrasing) "Patterson now taking the fight to Ellis. I don't think you could have found a boxing writer here that would have given any chance of Patterson lasting beyond the 5th round...one thing to consider is that Ellis needs to end this quickly to give his title some semplance of credibility. Patterson scored heavily there, Patterson on the attack! Ellis cut over the right eye!!!" (30k Swedes screaming their lungs out as Patterson tries to end it with one of his kangaroo left hooks which Jimmy dodged and survived the round.) I was welling up with tears. I miss the old days.
