Beau Jack when young SOLD out MSG SEVEN TIMES in one year...A muscular dynamo he was...Hooks, crosses, uppercuts, bolo punches, etc, Rocky Graziano-Before becoming champ...He would grab, his opponent by the neck with his left, and pulverize the guy with a clublike right...Watching young Rocky was ,was like being in the middle of a riot. Your picks ?
Nigel Benn, my dad and uncles used to follow him about quite a bit. Think they seen him about 6 times.
good call on benn, similar thing would be tony ayala amir khan to an extent early knockouts and flashy style with poor opponants and good promotion was a big hit. not what you wanted in this thread i know but still he was a crowd pleaser.
A Tyson fight would send my whole neighborhood indoors in the 80s. Beau Jack, Graziano, Benn, and Pacquiao are also great picks.
Gavilan, Duran, and in my own time Tyson. When i was a nipper Tyson fights were everything when they were coming round. We'd move the couch in front of the tv, i'd fall asleep and get woken up by the old man for fight time, even when the fight was over quick you didn't care, you were buying into that when you stayed up late for Tyson, and also Naseem early in his career (though that wasn't staying up late).
Growing up in England, Benn and Eubank were missed, Hamed was missed and Calzaghe is missed. I miss Ricardo Mayorga, i always wanted him to lose and i wish i still had that privaledge. Its funny when Hamed was active i hated him, same with Mayorga, same with Tyson, but now they are fighters i watch the most of and i love them. They talk so much stupid ****. But they backed it up...or give the opponent free shots...or bite an ear off...forearm a referree....do a crazy dance...or get knocked out. They always delivered in and out of the ring
benn, but i remember when i was younger selling stuff to get tickets for honeyghan blocker i really liked watching honeyghan
Yeah this is true, now we have the delights of watching Froch and Haye claim they can beat anyone, watching Hatton lose weight and counting down the days until Khan get's KO'd again......doesn't quite live up to a few years back. Maybe I'm being a little harsh on Hatton, he's a crowd pleaser for sure and gets massive support. Frank Bruno deserves a mention too.
You could never go wrong with Nigel Benn... everyone still remembers him too. Manny Pacquiao is my number one atm though!
Frank Bruno most definatley does! Bruno was our most beloved star at the time, in any sport. Seeing Tyson destroy him i think is a factor in Lewis' support. I don't feel Lewis is overrated whatsoever, but looking back at how loved Bruno was, Tyson destroying him was like a moral blow on the nation. And Lewis gave us revenge. I could just be grasping here, but i do think the Bruno losses then the Lewis revenge, made him a huge, loved, national star. I remember Lewis used to get alot of stick before the Tyson fight(homosexual etc) then after the Tyson fight, the press were living up his arsehole
