I have always thought Trevor Berbick's fights with Renaldo Snipes and Pinklon Thomas were very underrated, as well as the Griffith-Paret trilogy, Fullmer-Paret, Quarry vs. Lyle, Spinks vs. Burnett, Michael Spinks vs. Yaqui Lopez, Mercer vs. Witherspoon, and Jones vs. Folley II, as well as a host of some hundred more fights that I will not bore you with.
You must watch alot of YouTube. This is a good time to be a boxing fan. Years ago these fights weren't readily available, you would have to buy them from collectors.
Yes, that's true. I have often bellyached about what a terrible last two decades these have been for boxing, and how I would have much rather been alive in the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc., and while their may be some truth to that still, we are at an advantage here in the 2000s, where we can view ALL of the fights of every decade, something you couldn't do a while back.
Palomino/Green Feeney/Catouse Jones/Palm Conteh/Stevens Lucas/Bennet- Frankie at his merciless best. Not sure why anybody wouldn't also like ?
Sanchez/Gomez Saad Muhammad/Practically any except post-Braxton Holmes-Shavers I Holmes-Witherspoon Ali-London Spinks-Mustafa Muhammad
That must have been the fights I had when I was six years old. I fought with my best friend, and roommate every single day after school without fail. We were so little we couldn't really hurt each other, but we fought.
Not that people “don’t like” these fights but they don’t get enough talk: Jofre-Medel I Jofre-Legra Medel-Pimentel Zarate-Martinez Zarate-Davila Calzaghe-Brewer Buchanan-Watt Davila-Duarte II Zamora-Sandoval
Can still remember my dad buying me a cine-projecter 8mm for my 15 birthday, those of you who are of vintage years will know what I mean, 2 spools on a metal reel, with self connecting tape in between, plus a white screen on a try-pod that you put about 8/10 feet away ( funny thing was our front room was only 10 feet anyway ! ) the film I asked him to buy was Armstrong/Ross. Well it was not of good quality and kept blinkering all over the place, but to see Armstrong in action was spell binding. must have watched it 10 times that night, so much so that my dad shouted out " Michael turn that bloody thing off, me and your mum are trying to sleep " special times, lovely memories, of Mum and Dad, and of course Henry.
Feeney v Cattouse is a forgotten classic Mike, (Although for as much as ten years after it was still spoken about with reverence), I'd love some of our American friends to have a look at that and give us their opinion. Is the Royal Albert Hall just the best small hall for a fight ever ?
