We all often discuss our favorite fighters. The usual suspects occur - Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran, among others - but who were your favorite fighters who fell short, for whatever reason, of being "great" fighters. I really like to watch Donovan Ruddock fight. He throws his shots with mean intentions, always came across as a nice guy outside of the ring, and I was moved by how much punishment he was willing to take in his fights against Mike Tyson. He could have been forgiven for just showing up for the pay day, but he really wanted to beat Tyson, and that enabled him to walk through fire. Bert Cooper is another fighter who was far from being great but always entered the ring to fight. He gave Holyfield all he could handle, and came very close to knocking out then undefeated Michael Moorer. Always came across well in interviews, and gave the fans exactly what they wanted to see - exciting fights. Your favorite good fighters?
Frank Bruno. It was truly a "me or him" affair with Bruno and there was almost always something interesting going on. Ron Lyle. Michael Watson. Carl Thompson. I generally don't like boxers with iron chins (Marvin Hagler excepted) because I think boxing is at its best when either boxer could finish the fight at any time. I also generally prefer boxers who work off the jab and only throw other punches when aiming to do serious damage, since this adds to the mystique of the power-punch. So, while I admire them both, I'd far rather watch Lennox Lewis than Julio Cesar Chavez.
Michael Watson probably should have been great. He beat the crap out of Benn, and we all know he should have been given the verdict in the first Eubank fight and was well on his way to doing it for a second time until the "lucky" punch got him out of there.
...kinda. I've scored the first fight three different ways for Watson, W, D, L, so that could have gone any kind of way...but Micheal himself was even more convinced that you were that the wrong man got the nod causing him to fight wrecklessly in 2, which cost him more than just the fight...I think he would have been an extraordinary SMW, for sure.
Ruddock and Cooper had their chances, and they fell short simply because they weren't good enough. Watson is in a different boat. He beat up Nigel Benn, and no matter how you scored the first fight, he was outclassing Eubank in the rematch. Should have been one of the great British fighters.
Good pick. It's amazing how many memorable fights he's had, whether it's winning one-armed, blitzing Kali Meehan, beating blatant corruption, making Skelton look like Sugar Ray Leonard or having a fight so dull it was hilarious against Audley Harrison. If he'd had more commitment... We'd have probably had fewer legendary nights of boxing!
David Tua. Diego Corrales. Better than the "good" fighters being named on this thread, but short of "great" status IMO. I like Mike Weaver too. He could be a real monster puncher, knocking guys silly.
