But fought him five years later, when he was in his forties.

And Calzaghe wouldn't touch a rematch with a barge pole, so I take it he ducked Hopkins by fighting Jones instead?

Too easy to turn it around and I'm not making it up am I?

I can't buy the fact that Joe with a promoter like ****** only had :Hopkins ,Otteke and Johnson to pick from .

How does Glen Johnson get Jones jr ,Tarve ,Froch and Bute in the ring but in Joe only had 3 names to pick from in all that time ..And speaking of Johnson didn't Joe pull out that fight like 3 times ..Come on now ..Yet people want to knock Jones for losing to him .. Yeah don't get that ..

Very selective with the years but lets have a look.
At the end of 97 Calzaghe beat Eubank a top win

98 Calzaghe becomes the first man to ever stop Giminez and stops Sobot in 3. Sobot fought Cherifi who went on to become WBC MW champ to a SD. Cherifi beat K Holmes. So in a year to have Eubanks name and a couple of gimmes isnt terrible.
I would add that Sobot was a sub for undefeated Salmaci

99 Calzaghe only has 2 fights, one a good away win to top 10 world rated Reid, who looked unlucky years later against Ottke and who beat undefeated B Magee now WBA int champ and beat Brinkley who worked his way to become a SMW mandatory and...
Thornberry who if you know what you are going on about, was a tune up for S Collins who was meant to fight on the same bill only to pull out and stay retired

    00. Fights 3 times that year and beats 3 top 10 SMWs.
Starie on a neutral site. Starie beat undefeated Woods who became a LHW world champ.
Top 10 SMW Sheika who was coming off a win over future LHW champ G Johnson.
Woodhall who was a top 10 SMW and former world champ

01 Only had 2 fights, one over undefeated Veit who went on to become an interin world champ and top 10 SMW and
    McIntyre on a neutral site.
I would note McIntyre was a late sub for Echoles who pulled out late

02 has 3 fights beating top 10 rated Brewer, a former SMW world champ.
Jimenez a mandatory and not a great win
Pudwill who had gone the distance with a SMW world champ, not a great win.
Still note Pudwill was a late sub for T Tate who pulled out and retired

04 only 2 fights again. Mkertchyan who went on to win the European SMW title with a KO victory over undefeated 26-0 world rated champ Chanet. Note Mkertchyan has done more at SMW than A Dirrell who is top 10 rated now.
Salem who was a mandatory and not a great win

So in the years of 98, 99, 00, 01, 02 & 04 Calzaghe beat 7 top 10 rated SMWs (one who had just left the top would make 8 but not included) and out of those 14 fighters 3 of those were subs and one a gimme for a tune up to a big fight that fell through. Is it Calzaghes fault, Salmaci, Tate, Echoles and Collins backed out? No
Whats wrong with that? Is it Calzaghes fault.
You missed out 03 where Calzaghe only fought once against a top 10 SMW which would make 8 top 10 rated SMWs out of 14 where 3 of the 6 non top 10 rated were subs for fighters that backed out

    Precisely where I stopped reading:lol:

Selective with the years? I gave you SIX, which is almost 60% of his championship reign.

    Test me for **** sake!

    Let's look at the boxers around Reluctant Roy's weight class during that period who did travel to Europe to risk a defeat;

    Champions;

    Eubank
    Hill (twice)
    McCallum
    Mitchell
    Liles
    Sugar Joe
    Brewer
    Reggie Johnson
    Gonzalez

    Challengers;

    Nunn (co-challenger)
    Lucas
    Benn
    Reid
    Glen Johnson
    Del Valle (co-challenger)
    Griffin

Yet Jones, the paper champion who laughably declared himself 'undisputed' champion whilst hiding behind his imaginary p4p title, showed no interest at all in meeting DM, not even in a neutral country. He went so far as to try and ban DM's name on broadcasts of his fights.

    Cherry picking, manipulative disgrace.

    Once again so wrong :patsch

Woodhall had beaten WBC champ Malinga, beaten former WBC champ Nardiello, beaten future WBA LHW champ Branco, beat future WBC champ Catley. Woodhall only lost a very close debateable decision to future 3 time WBC champ Beyer who then got beat by a Woodhall victim

Woodhall - Beyer who beat Woodhall was KOd by Woodhall victim Catley
1: Joe Calzaghe* (Britain), 29-0, WBO
2: Sven Ottke (Germany), 20-0, IBF
3: Bruno Girard (France), 38-2-1, WBA
    4: Byron Mitchell, 21-1-1
    5:

    (Britain), 26-2

Reid beat WBC champ Nardiello away, future WBC MW champ Cherifi, looked very unlucky to SMW great Ottke and beat now current WBA int champ Magee
1: Joe Calzaghe* (Britain), 26-0, WBO champ
2: Frankie Liles*, 32-1, WBA champ
3: Richie Woodhall (Britain), 25-1, WBC champ
    4:

Eubank had more than a weeks notice, the same amount of notice Calzaghe had, but Eubank was training for a fight on the same night against a more known considered tougher fighter (then). Eubank was favoured to win
    After Eubanks fight with Calzaghe
    1. Frankie Liles*, 31-1, WBA champ
    2. Joe Calzaghe* (Britain), 23-0, WBO champ
    3. Robin Reid (Britain), 25-0-1, WBC champ
    4. Joseph Kiwanuka (Uganda), 25-1-2

      (Britain), 45-3-2
Brewer was still top 10 rated, but lets look at the losses you note. Oh yeah 2 SDs that many felt he won and a stoppage loss against a fighter he put down 3 times. Not quite what you try and make out. Did you think Brewer lost those 2 away SDs?

    Veit
The win Calzaghe had over Veit was a very good victory.
The first time Calzaghe beat Veit, Veit was 30-0 and hadnt beaten anyone of real note, hence he was blown away in a round by Calzaghe.
When Calzaghe beat Veit a 2nd time Veit was an accomplished world rated 45-1 fighter, WBO int world champ and who had some solid victories behind him, and was top 10 rated.
Veit had beaten undefeated Dziarra who wasnt a great fighter but did go on to beat L Mock and undefeated M Oral who would go on to challenge MW champs A Abraham and S Sylvester recently.
Veit had also beaten beaten undefeated Guerrero for the European union title.
Veit beat future title challenger Salem and Mock.
Veit also beat world rated C Brewer with an educated destructive 9th round KO.
A note on Veit. He only ever lost to world champs or fighters who became world champs and has victories over Mock, Salem, Perdermo (a future Kessler challenger), Brewer when Brewer was world rated and Veit beat undefeated Braehmer 27-0 who became WBO LHW champ.
A good Calzaghe victory over a mandatory world class SMW
Also a great away victory for Calzaghe in Germany
Veit when Calzaghe fought him a 2nd time
1: Joe Calzaghe* (GB), 38-0, WBO

    2: Jeff Lacy, 19-0-0-1, IBF

3: Mikkel Kessler (Denmark), 35-0, WBA

4: Markus Beyer* (Germany), 32-2, WBC

    5: Danny Green (Australia), 19-2

    6: Mads Larsen* (Denmark), 45-2

7: Robin Reid (GB), 38-4-1, IBO

    8: Anthony Mundine (Australia), 23-2

    9:

    (Germany), 45-1

Ferreyra was a mandatory and a fighter who had never been stopped taking Eubank and Benn the distance. A former top 10m rated SMW. Not a great win but a good stoppage

    Sheika
Was coming off a win over G Johnson and over hyped or not was top 10 rated and went on to challenge for world titles again
1: Joe Calzaghe* (Britain), 28-0, WBO
2: Sven Ottke (Germany), 19-0, IBF

3: Glenn Catley (Britain), 26-3, WBC
4: Bruno Girard (France), 37-2-1, WBA
    5: Byron Mitchell, 20-1-1
    6: Markus Beyer (Germany), 18-1
    7: Richie Woodhall (Britain), 26-2
    8: James Butler, 16-1
    9: Charles Brewer, 35-6

Ashira was a tune up for Lacy but was a top 10 MW who Calzaghe beat with a broken hand

He didn't take any flush shots to highlight his lack of Chin and was pinned against the cage for the majority of the bout. It is fights like that confirm to me why I will always prefer Boxing even though the biggest Glass Jawed Jokes are to be found in MMA.

Calslappys resume is what it is, but I dont know if people are fair when they call him a cherrypicker. It might be a stereotype that developed since he cashed out against a shot Jones, so now suddenly he "hid" in Wales for almost his whole career, never fighting anything but "bums".

He tried to get Hopkins in 2003, I mean what more can he do but try? We can slate him for not going after a prime Jones if you like, but if that was the only fighter he really ducked I dont know if I can hate him for it.

Sure, he could have moved up in weight I guess, but I think he was to skinny to compete above SMW. It is not like a fighter has some kind of obligation to fight above his natural weight.

Lacy was 5-0 in world title fights, had beaten world rated top 10 rated Vanderpool, top 10 world rated Pemberton, Sheika, future European SMW champ Tsypko and top 10 world rated Reid.
Lacy was favourite to win and a world champ

Jones was #6 LHW by the ring and was coming off 3 wins. One being Tito considered by many as Hopins big win.
Lets remember that Jones, Calzaghe was viewed as a bigger better fight than Hopkins, Pavlik and many predicted Jones to win
Bet you didnt disagree with all these so called experts before the fight
Hindsight is one thing, but look at the facts, the Ring LHW champ beat The Ring #6 in a fight many expected him to lose. It was a big fight at the time but now Calzaghe clearly won, they say Jones was shot

Bernard Hopkins- Former two-division world champion
Fought Joe Calzaghe on April 19, 2008 and lost by split decision
Fought Roy Jones Jr. May 22, 1993 and lost by unanimous decision

“Jones by unanimous decision based on his speed and power.”

    Lennox Lewis- Former heavyweight champion
"Jones has unbelievable speed and Calzaghe's never fought anyone like him. Jones likes it when his opponent comes to him and unfortunately for Calzaghe, that's exactly what he does; comes to his opponent and is right in their face. I pick Jones on points, but I think it’ll be a very close fight."

Jeff Lacy- Former IBF super middleweight champion
Fought Joe Calzaghe March 4, 2006 and lost by unanimous decision

“It’s going to be a hard fight to pick. If Jones doesn't stay on the ropes and give Calzaghe angles and lots of movement I'm going to go with Jones by decision. Roy can't stay on the ropes and give Joe the chance to throw his slapping punches. This is a great fight for Jones to win and setup a big money fight again with Hopkins!”

Glen Johnson- Former IBF, IBO and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion
Fought Roy Jones September 25, 2004 and won by KO in 9th round

“Roy Jones will win. I believe Calzaghe fights an amateur style. He throws a lot of slappy punches. Roy throws much more meaningful punches. In general, Calzaghe will throw more punches than Roy, but Roy’s will be harder hitting. Unless the judges are blind, they will see that the harder punches make Jones the winner. They should see that Roy Jones’ hard-hitting punches make the difference.”

Vernon Forrest - WBC welterweight champion
“Roy Jones is still the best fighter in my era and still arguably one of the best fighters period. Roy with his speed can match Calzaghe, and he has power. So the power and speed is with Roy. Roy by decision.”

Paulie Malignaggi- Former IBF junior welterweight champion.

"It's a hard fight to pick. I thought Calzaghe at first because, but maybe he's too much for Roy right now. But based on what Joe just said about the three Brits beating the three Americans (Calzaghe-Jones, Hatton-Malignaggi, Haye-Barrett), I'm pulling Roy home.....Jones by decision."

Winky Wright- Former world junior middleweight champion

“I think Roy is going to win. I think that his punches are going to be sharper than Calzaghe’s and I think that Roy is a harder puncher. I think it might go all 12 rounds, but if somebody gets stopped I think its Calzaghe late in the fight.”

    Dan Rafael- ESPN.com

“Although Calzaghe is the favorite, I think Jones' style and speed -- he's still fast -- are going to give him problems. I think it will be a tough, close fight but I'm going with the upset special. I like Jones to pull it out on a close decision.”

    Gordon Marino- Wall Street Journal

”Jones over Calzaghe. This is a fascinating fight. Jones is still quick and with his awkward style and dangerous punching power is able to freeze very active opponents like Calzaghe. I'm picking Jones by a decision.”

Tim Smith- New York Daily News

“Roy Jones has good power and I think that will offset the volume of punches that Calzaghe throws. Calzaghe has a good chin so I don't see him getting knocked out. I like Jones in a decision.”

    Franklin McNeil- Newark Star Ledger
“On paper, Calzaghe should not have much difficulty getting by Jones. Calzaghe is a southpaw, and Jones has had his most difficult outings against non-orthodox fighters. And though each man has quite a few miles on his tires, Jones has logged a bit more. The physical edge goes to Calzaghe, but stylistically Jones’ constant movement could prove to be beneficial. If Jones can control the pace, make Calzaghe miss, score with counter shots and his stamina holds up, he will win. Jones wins by decision.”

    Bobby Cassidy- Newsday
“I like Roy Jones in the 11th round TKO. Calzaghe does not have the power to keep Jones honest. I think by the second half of the fight Jones will be picking him a part. Calzaghe looked so good against Hopkins because Hopkins didn't have the firepower to slow him down. But Jones has both speed and power. In other fights, Calzaghe has been able to adjust to one of those assets; he won't be able to adjust to both, especially from a fighter like Jones.”

There are were more predictions for Jones against Calzaghe, that picked Jones as a winner.
Although there were many that also picked for Calzaghe the poll on Bunces boxing was said 60% in favour of Jones.

Bika is still top 10 rated today, and looked unlucky to many not to get a draw with Ward. In fact Calzaghe beat Bika clearer than current champ Ward managed years later when Bika had had only a few fights in a few years

Hopkins was LHW champ and Calzaghe beat him sandwiched between Hopkins best wins of Tarver, Wright and Pavlik and guess what... Hopkins is champ again after Calzaghe retired:hi:
