They were close to fighting. Around late 1998 in a unification but then Top Rank & Oscar came in & offered Quartey the fight. Oscar was puzzled why they’d fight each other when they’d make so much more fighting him but at that stage both guys were tired waiting around and remember, Tito had the Norris fight fall through when Norris pulled out & Quartey had the Whitaker fight get canceled.

I’ve brought up Quartey before and Tito said “very strong” and sort of flexed pointing to his muscles, saying he was well built. I told him I thought Quartey had beaten Oscar and he didn’t disagree and said it was a very close fight.

Ghana could be my favorite fighting nation. Quartey is probably my favorite, loved his arrogance when I was just getting interested in the sport, but I was big fight of Joshua Clottey and Joseph Agbeko also.
When Samuel Takyi won Olympic Bronze in 2021 at 19 years old, I was hoping there could be a new star from Ghana - but not sure what's up with him. He turned pro, but barely got his career moving.

Good stuff Chris. Would have loved to have seen that fight between two guys that never avoided anyone.

Love Azumah Nelson. Shame he never got the McGuigan fight though lucky for Barry who would have been destroyed.

Alfred Kotey was an exciting puncher who was very inconsistant. Died too young.

David Tetteh was another teak tough Ghanian (aren´t they all) who came to England and battered Billy Schwer for the Commonwealth crown.

I thought I can just seen the birth of a star. His 1st defence was in Canada against the undefeated Billy Irwin who took a very contentious decision. Tetteh showed his mettle by travelling to Canada again and taking a clear decision over Irwin.

I guess he had managerial problems, injury or just avoided because fought infrequently and basically disappeared with 5 fights in 3 years. Would have liked to have seen him in some big fights.
