My name sake had a beauty of a fight with Billy Graham (number 3) and that's my pick here. Both guys had amazing skills and super entertaining styles.

    Benitez-Duran.

Butt hurt Duran fans tend to down play that fight because he lost and make up that he didn’t train, wasn’t motivated etc. On the contrary I think Duran was in good shape and looked good in some patches this fight it’s just that Benitez was razor sharp and the better man on the night. If you watch the fight with an open mind you’ll see some brilliant tactical feints, footwork, punch placement and subtle defensive moves that you won’t see in most fights displayed by both men. A high skilled fight between two highly skilled masters and it isn’t the whitewash that some people say it was. Duran was good and won some rounds it’s just that Wilfredo was better.

Another vote for McCallum-Kalambay II. I'd probably rate that as McCallum's best win, actually, even though it was a razor-thin SD.

Another favorite is Canto-Oguma III, even if Oguma's not the cleanest technical fighter you'll ever see. That was one in which Canto couldn't use his jab as much as he liked (as opposed to his fights with Gonzalez and Furesawa), so he really had to be clever in there. Oguma of course had to pick his punches wisely against the supreme counterpuncher, and he couldn't bully Canto the way he did Park. This resulted in a fight in which both guys worked hard to out-think each other.

Excellent post. Duran was in good shape (as good as ever at that weight except for maybe Moore) and fought well. Benitez was just a better 154 pounder. And I agree it's a very underrated fight.

I only watched this fight for the first time about a month ago. I had only read things that'd led me to believe I'd be watching a scientific boxing skills duel, and one that seemed to me was thought of as a dud by more fans than not. It just feels I've seen/read more negative opinions of that fight than positives. Is there anyone here old enough to know what the overall opinion of the fight was amongst fans of the time? I most certainly didn't watch no dud, this I do know! I also know that I watched a fight that was much more entertaining (IMO, of course) than Benitez vs Leonard.

Personally Leonard vs Benitez. The fight doesn't get the credit it deserves, and of course all the excuse makers ( A common thread for Leonard haters, in this case, Benitez only trained a week, like Hearns over trained, Duran got fat, Hagler old, etc ,etc, etc, )
The fight itself was a classical master piece of two brilliant fighters in the primes of their careers. The defensive tactics , and counters were top notch. The difference was Leonard was better offensively, better jab, with better and creative combination punching.
Hearns vs Benitez, a fight that showcased Benitez 's defensive ability. Also Hearns freakish height and reach advantages and how hard it was to reach him because of those attributes.
Maccallum vs Toney. McCallum was beginning to slip by their 1st fight. But still, a great fight to watch where two supremely skilled fighters matched wits.
Napoles vs Griffith. A brilliant performance by Napoles against the bigger Griffith. Fight wasn't close though.
Duran vs DeJesus #3, Palomino, Moore, and Barkley. Duran's brilliance on full display in these 4 fights. To a newby to the sport it would seem Duran simply out muscled those opponents. Look closer. Duran gave each a boxing lesson. Scientific aggression at its best. The Leonard in Montreal fight also can be added to this list.
Deloyhoya vs Whitaker, Whitaker wasn't as sharp as he was a couple yrs prior, however I guarantee you Deloyhoya didn't feel the same way after this fight. Whitaker may have won the fight if he were the media darling Deloyhoya was during this time period.
Trinidad vs Deloyhoya a very strange and unexpected result. Deloyhoya loss , though up until the finale 3 rds pretty much dominated Trinidad. But making it a track meet the last 3rds rightfully/wrongfully caused him the fight, and what should've been his biggest win.
