I'd go: 1. Viloria 2. H. Marquez 3. Mthalane 4. Igarashi (L) 5. Jaro Honorable mention to Wonjongkam, Sosa, and Melindo. Gotta admit though, not familiar with Melindo at all...
Is Wongjongkam still fighting? If so does he plan on rematching Jaro? Either way I have the same list at VXnefarious. Incidentally I think Viloria's people were nuts not to fight Jaro when Jaro still had the Ring Magazine belt. Brian could have outboxed and stopped Jaro late to pick up the lineal undisputed title, which would have really boosted his hall of fame credentials. Then he could have defended agains number 1 contender Tyson Marquez.
Hey Smoak, what do you reckon Viloria's chances at the IBHOF are if he beats Tyson Marquez? He's got a serious case: Segura Miranda Keb Baas/Keb Baas Eric Ortiz Ulises Solis Nino Marquez If he beats Marquez and then avenges his loss to Sosa or captures the ring title or repeats his win over Solis he'll have a great chance at getting in. That's impressive considering the mid-career crisis he had, and the fact that very, very few flyweights get in.
I agree. Plus it would have been a domestic Filipino showdown. Big mistake by his management. As for Wonjongkam, according to boxrec: 2012 3/2: Sonny Boy Jaro- L TKO6 5/31: ? Tubis- W KO3 7/27: Ji-Hun Lee- W TKO4 * 8/31: Hyobu Nakagama- W UD12 ** 9/28: Charlie Cabilla- W TKO1 * with a recorded weight of 114 lbs. ** for the vacant WBC international flyweight title
I thought a lot about that when considering my 2011 Fighter of the Year (had him in my view of the clear top 3 with Donaire and Ward). First of all, relatively speaking, Wonjongkam is the elite HOF flyweight of the era. I view him as a first ballot, and amongst the all timers at the weight. Viloria's nasty mid-career crisis was just that. From 06-10 he had a bad stretch (barring his terrific Solis win). The fighters he's lost to are quality, no doubt. The Nino loss is a little blah with the positive test in the immediate rematch and the future beatdown in the third. But Edgar Sosa and Carlos Tamara in your physical prime? That said, if he beats Hernan Marquez and decisively so, I'd put Viloria as having had one of the very best 2 year stretches in all of boxing, along with the before mentioned Donaire and Ward and that's it. He was in awesome action fights, even in the one sided ones, with the three Nino, Solis, Miranda, Segura, and I can't see Marquez not being all action. Not that that boosts HOF credentials... but hey, an observation can't hurt. He is a two weight titlist. A two time titlist at 108 and potentially a unified at 112. Impressive. He turns 32 right after the fight next month, and that would be the lead in to my answer. Not now at all if he retired. He has plenty of time and the perfect opportunities to top off a resume that deserves thought. 112 is full of good top opposition to finish off while a move up to the weak 115 for a reign would be good icing on the cake. Ulises Solis and Giovani Segura = elite victories Julio Cesar Miranda = very good victory Eric Ortiz, Omar Nino III, G. Keb Baas, and Jose Aguirre = good notable victories He's on his way if he keeps to the recent trend... Needs a couple more defining fights and then just typical quality names/defenses. It's super tough for a flyweight to get in, on virtue of remaining consistent for any amount of extended time and, the obvious, getting competition that warrants high praise. edit: Just looked into his amateur career. I knew he was great, with the famous Donaire fights. He was 230-8 with Gold at the '99 World Amateur Championships at light flyweight.
Jaro vs. Viloria? I can't recall an all-Filipino championship bout in recent years. They don't like fighting each other on the world stage.
Champ- Toshiyuki Igarashi 1. Brian Viliora 2. Hernan Marquez 3. Sonny Boy Jaro 4. Pongsaklek Wongjongkam 5. Moruti Mthlane 6. Edgar Sosa 7. Milan Meldino 8. Rocky Fuentes 9. Luis Concepion 10. Juan Carlos Reveco
Good, I like... Thanks for participating man, but honestly, this is one of those cases where I can't help but hold the opinion of "I'm right and you're way wrong" on this one. Igarashi, Jaro, Wonjongkam all clearly ahead of Segura and Concepcion. Concepcion is a good shout for 7-9-ish for sure... If we were talking about "P4P ranking of guys who are currently at flyweight" then yes, I agree, Segura makes the list with ease. But this is what they've done within the division limits. Yep... I remember his fight with Manuel Vargas was supposed to be at flyweight but Segura came in overweight.
1. Igarashi (just because he beat the "champ") 2. Viloria 3. Marquez 4. Mthalane 5. Jaro or Melindo (pick one)
