Markle had her own money already. A little harder to call her a gold digger. Also way prettier than Givens ever was. (I'm not really a Markle fan, just saying)
We all saw it coming. It's like a tagline for a horror movie: "It was his fate. He was warned. He was doomed. And on Valentine's Day, nothing will save him!"
The Mike Tyson Story back in those days reads like the classic archetypal story of the rise and fall of a boxing champion. Just like those old movies with John Garfield and Kirk Douglas and James Cagney, or what happened to Jack Dempsey and a vast number of the old-timers who came before and after. Mike seemed to incorporate every trope from boxing history and legend and fiction, everything you'd expect from the 'rise and fall' story. The whole gambit, the whole morality play. It's almost as if he wanted it all to happen that way.
Tyson was well aware of Greek tragedy figures as well... dude also read a lot of comics and there's a lot of interesting stories there as well ... He literally quoted a comic character after the Biggs fight iirc ... He may have subconsciously desired for this to happen to him, for whatever reason
I don't see it The truth is that Larry's chin, jab, and recovery didn't decline that much by the time he fought Tyson ... And every time he tried to mount an offense against Tyson, he paid for it ... And we can't forget what Holmes beating Ali meant to Tyson .... D'Mato was involved in Tysons disdain of Holmes as well ... He's going to try and trade with Tyson and he's going to pay dearly for it
Tyson and Holmes are my 2 favorite heavyweights of all time followed by Dempsey, Bowe, Liston and Louis. I don't think Holmes has enough power to keep Tyson honest like a Bowe or Lewis could. I rank Holmes highly, #3 ATG and #4 H2H, but Mike Tyson is the one heavyweight that beats Larry Holmes every time in my mind.
.......and lets not forget Holmes was coming off a nearly two year layoff. In fact Holmes was retired and out of the gym when the Tyson fight was offered to him. Facing an undefeated Tyson, I think its a good idea for a fighter to be active and sharp. Would have been prudent for Holmes to have had a tuneup or two before taking on the task of Iron Mike.
Too bad young Mike didn’t duly have his missgivens. Well he did but he didn’t, if you know what I mean.
Holmes was supposed to fight Tyson after his second Spinks loss in 1986. Cayton and Jacobs came thisclose to securing a Tyson-Holmes bout but HBO wanted Tyson in their HBO Unification Tournament and the Tyson-Holmes bout was put on the shelf. Cayton and Jacobs promised Holmes first crack at the undisputed championship once Tyson unified the 3 belts. So Holmes knew a fight with Tyson was a go as early as 1986. Holmes just didn't want to lose face if he were to struggle or look bad against anyone before his shot at Tyson. That's why Holmes didn't fight since the 2nd bout with Spinks and fought a 15 round exhibition to stay busy. So the whole Holmes wasn't ready for Tyson jargon needs to be put to rest. He knew a bout with Tyson was secured since mid 1986 and the excuses only came after he got shellacked in 4 rounds.
