The four man that define the division in your mind. Not necessarily the best as far as resume or h2h goes, but the ones that make you think: Mein Gott, I could really fall in love with this division. Archie Moore Ezzard Charles Sam Langford Roy Jones Jr. .. and honorable mentions for: Gene Tunney, Harold Johnson, and Billy Conn.
Ezzard Charles Harry Greb Gene Tunney John Henry Lewis Michael Spinks and Archie Moore could easily be changed with any of the bottom 3. Bob Foster, Jimmy Bivins and Tommy Laughran not far behind either.
Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Harry Greb and Michael Spinks are my choices. Moore has the best title reign in the division's history and has beaten an incredible amount of quality names. Charles has defeated Moore 3 times and shares many victims with him, with almost as much depth. Greb might outright surpass both in sheer depth with wins over Tunney, Loughran, Gibbons, Dillon, Norfolk, Delaney, Miske, Levinsky and more. Spinks has beaten many iconic names like Qawi, Johnson and Mustafa Muhammad at the poundage, and it just feels weird not to mention him given his accomplishments there.
This is incredibly tough, so to simplify it I will make it division orientated, and focus on title reigns. Tommy Loughran Billy Conn Archie Moore Michael Spinks
Archie Moore has to be there. Bob Foster? Jones for sure Tommy Loughran Others might have an argument are of course Spinks, Dillon, Conn, Tiger, Hopkins and others.
Spinks, Moore, Jones, Foster Ezz was one of the top three ever in the division probably, but he didn’t win a title there. Greb’s arguably the best fighter ever to spend time in the division but his resume isn’t anchored there. So I went with the four I think were best who really did the work at light heavy.
Archie Moore Ezzard Charles Michael Spinks And then Matthew Saad Muhammad for being the most entertaining Light Heavyweight champion of all time.
If I would be judging them objectively, then yes. I wanted it to be a biased Mt. Rushmore, hence: "not necessarily the best as far as resume or h2h goes, but the ones that make you think: Mein Gott, I could really fall in love with this division."
archie moore ezzard charles bob foster maxie rosenbloom i didn't include greb or langford because most of their best work was done at middleweight or heavyweight respetcively
