If you only get to watch one fight of a fighter, what techniques would be immediate stand outs for measuring how skilled he is?
It wouldn't be a specific technique, but how adaptable the fighter is in the ring, the punch variety and setups the fighter displays, and the ring movement/defense are big keys for me. Ward is pretty much the gold standard these days as he is able to fight inside and outside, goes to the head and body mixing up his punches well, and his movement/defense is top notch applying pressure, in the pocket, or on the outside. That's cherry-picking to some extent, so I'll say Alfonso Gomez has always impressed me as a good example with his actual level of overall boxing skill even though he's held back by a lack of athleticism. He is able to pressure fight, fight inside with short punches, and cut off the ring well(which a lot of pressure fighters are terrible at), can box and counterpunch on the outside, goes to the head and body, and actually uses decent upper body movement and subtle ring movement on defense though he lacks foot speed. Bases everything around a solid jab.
Agreed, I've been high on Alfonso for a long time. He just doesn't have the speed and athleticism to carry him over to elite status. Another fighter worth studying is Gerry Penalosa. He showed his skill in spades when he "lost" to DPL.
young ali, the way he use to move in the ring. his cat like reflexes, esp. when defending himself, the way he use to toy with an opponent. skill :deal
it depends on the competition. if he's against a top fighter the greatest measurement of skill is getting the W are you talking about a prospect? outside of the talent (speed/fleetnes, and power, chin too, but you learn more about that later,) i look for a prospect to avoid punches, manage his gas tank, and land clean punches in combination. i also like to see a jab, regardless of the style. pro boxing is easier to score if a fighter is working with and off of the jab. winners usually jab. i can't go by the same specific criterion for each figher. a tall and rangy fighter is obviously going to want to box. a shorter fighter with power is going to want to shrink the ring. a counterpuncher is going to look to act second. to those ends, the best means for evaluating the skills is to determine their effectiveness. it's a result based phenomenon. if a fighter wins he's doing something right, and displaying the neccessary skills for victory.
most top fighters were incredible athletes. louis, marciano, tyson, hamed, willie pep, all great athletes
Knowledge of how to win a fight. Skills aren't anything if you don't know how to outfight someone. Dawson is a good example, all the skills in the world but can't execute a gameplan to save his life. Khan too. Ward is a guy who knows how to win.
Just proper mechanics. Punching form, stance, guard, the basics of footwork (not crossing their feet, moving laterally, etc).
