Never mind that. That was a response to Doug.ie. Address the first post I made on why I thought Greb is overrated and correct me. That is what you brought me up on. Im willing to be educated?
Never mind that? I was responding to your response to Doug.i.e. where you state that Greb never fought Johnson and Langford which I can only conclude is something you hold against Greb and is a reason why you think he's overrated, even though they were both heavyweights! As for your first post it's even better, you state that fighters like Greb and Langford were from an era when boxing was still under developed and they were basically unskilled, and didn't progress until fighters like Johnson came along, who actually preceded Greb! As for educating you why Greb isn't overrated? Well because he's possibly got the greatest resume in boxing history, the only man to beat Tunney(incidently a modern style developed fighter) so the "human windmill" style must have been pretty effective. It's argued that he beat tunney twice more but didn't get the decisions.
I believe if no footage existed of Jack Dempsey , he would have the same legendary, untouchable status Greb has. The writings of Dempsey would have you believe he was unbeatable and the GOAT. But since there is enough footage out there, people decided for themselves he is overrated and/or how good he really was.
Greb was far far more proven than Dempsey against his contemparies and never ducked anyone in his weight classes. Dempsey even knocked Greb for defending his title against a black man in Tiger Flowers
In Greb's case although there's no known footage of him, there's plenty of the fighters he beat. Also of the Tunney losses two have him winning the newspaper verdicts. At the very least he was beating and running extremely close Dempsey's conquerer at heavyweight and an ATG light heavyweight fighter. Oh and that's besides beating Walker,Loughran,Gibbons,Flowers,Bogash, McTigue,Levinsky and many others, and all mainly giving away size and weight.
Thats fair enough. No argument there but how good would he have been against guys past 1940. I think his style would have been easily exploited as would the other guys of that very early era.
Tunney had better be the one on top on their session (which he hasn't.). Greb was past the 200 fights mileage (about 5 times Tunney's career at that point), the smaller man, one eyed... And you do realize the guy that shaped, groomed and some might say even built Louis shared stage with both overrated, prehistorical savages you mentioned right?
Norris is vastly underrated. he upset the odds and defeated a man none of the experts gave him a chance against. how can that be overrated? in fact, terry far exceeded expectations of him. They THOUGHT he'd simply quiet down and die a quick death after the loss to Jackson, but instead, made the greatest comeback in boxing history with a shocking one round upset of Mugabi and then went on to set the record for title defenses in his division, something that no one, not even myself, would have imagined
Dempsey is kicked mostly because of the thinness of his record. And you're saying that people can make a fair assessment of Dempsey because there is enough footage (although that's wrong) but is dismissing Greb based on what a few seconds of sparring?
How many Hall of Famers did Dempsey beat? Greb faced 16 of them a total of 48 times winning 33 times. 4 of the losses were to future heavy champ Tunney.
