I'd like to know the opinions on the forum of these two fighters and their fight at the weekend. What was the point of this fight, here we have one fighter who since being savagely whipped by Calzaghe for 12 rounds, has done nothing of any relevance in the sport against a guy who despite his "resume" couldn't beat a straight up and down fighter like Kelly Pavlik in 2 fights. Are these 2 guys regarded as the top level at SMW now that Calzaghe isn't around? Why isn't JT setting up fights with Froch, Kessler & Bute? Is it because those guys are Eurobums with padded records?
Lacy is a changed fighter after that shoulder injury. Good performance by Jermain though, but Lacy was right there for him.
Lacy is done and I believe Taylor when he said he just needed a fight back to get his confidence up. I think if Taylor and Pavlik fought today that Taylor would win. If the fight was at 168. I think Taylor was suffering from trying to make the weight at 168. I think a fight between Kessler and Taylor is closer than we think. I don't think Calzaghe will fight at a catch weight of 170 and I don't think Taylor will move up to 175, so I don't think a Calzaghe vs Taylor fight is even a possibility.
Yeah, Taylor looked good; I was pleased with his performance. Lacy looked like he looked in all his fights since Calzaghe. He should take the biggest money fight out there, wherever that is in the world and then retire.
I thought this fight made a lot of sense, actually. Former teammates, both on the comeback trail. Lacy hasn't look good since Calzaghe and this gave him a chance for redemption. Taylor needed a stepping stone to Supermiddleweight and the as-of-late-lackluster Lacy was the perfect opportunity for him as well. One of the fights where it just makes sense for it to happen, and Taylor is the one who capitalized.
I'd like to see Taylor vs. Bute. Not sure Taylor has what it takes to defeat Kessler, although I believe the fight would be competitive. Lacy is shot and needs to retire.
The fight was interesting up until about the sixth round when Taylor started to just tie up Jeff for no reason at all from there on it was boring, not Taylors fault its jeffs fault. Something has changed in jeff and it isnt the shoulder I just dont think he has it in him anymore to fight on the level needed to win these big fights.
Lacy was never much to begin with. A lot of his fights were fights he was losing on points til he KO'd the guy in explosive fashion. Calzaghe (to steal a Merchant quote) schooled and then expelled Lacy. The collarbone injury was the end at that point. Taylor is a threat to anyone at 168. When his mind is there he's a very good fighter. Taylor against any of the top 5 at 168 would be fun to watch.
I disagree about Lacy. He was much better 2004-05 than his present reputation says he was. Also, not so sure you are correct about him needing late KOs to bail himself out of trouble. In fact, I am 100% sure you are wrong about that. Agree on Taylor, although I don't fancy his chances against Kessler. That's probably his toughest bout at 168, and I think even there he'd pose a real threat to the Dane.
I'm almost certain I'm right about it. I won't admit to be the ULTIMATE Lacy expert but I always figured he was one dimensional. I kind of wish I was posting here back then because I would've made a bundle on V-Cash As per Taylor-Kessler, Kessler is probably all wrong for Taylor. He's an aggressive fighter with a very deadly 1-2 (much like Pavlik) but also possessing more power. If Taylor fights the way he did against Pavlik (#2), He might have a good shot. If he fights the way he did against Lacy and Pavlik in the first fight, Kessler would probably dominate him in relatively short fashion. Kessler is as close to unbeatable as there is at 168.
