So i'm sitting at work thinking, it's well documented that the heavyweight division isnt what it was 10 or 15 years ago. And it's been done to death how we feel the champions (Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, Moorer) of that era would do against today's champions. But here's my question, if the division is so much worse now than then, then lets take a look at some fringe heavyweight contenders from that era and see how you think they would do if they were in their prime today. Fighters like Ray Mercer, Razor Ruddick, Tommy Morrison, Oliver McCall. If they were fighting prime today (and any others in that level/era you can think of) how do you think they'd do against todays champions and top contenders. I personally think with Ray Mercer's chin he could probably be champion today, quite possibly Morrison and Ruddick as well fi they could land the big punch before they took one. What do you all think?
I think that people mistake the lack of stars in the heavyweight division, for a lack of talent. There is ALWAYS talent in the world, the difference is media coverage and exposer. In the 90's most of the top dogs were from the United States, and the big American Media marketing machine was behind them. Now, most of the top Heavyweights are NOT from the United States, and they don't have the type of exposer that those in the US had. In the 90's all that everyone used to talk about was how weak the 90's were..... and how outside of Holyfield, none of the top fighters were fighting each other.
george foreman of the 90s would beat 90% of whats out there today..... i dont see oleg mascaev, ibraigmov, peter, tony thompson, rahman, toney, oquendo...****, this is getting pathetic...only guys that would have a chance would be the Klits
You know guys like Sanders, Briggs and Maskiev weren't able to become champs in thier peak yrs during the 90s, but in this era while in thier mid 30s they were, Aside from the K bros, Haye and Povetkin this is a division full of shitty fighters, possibly the worst era ever.
:good Bang on. I think people confuse talent with excitement. It seemed more exciting back then because boxing seemed more popular and relevant, and people like Tyson were mainstream news, all over the world.
If we could get meaningful fights made the Heavyweight division would be fine. But the top 8 or so Heavyweights will not fight each other mainly due to their promoters not wanting to take risks. And to say this Division is the worst ever is laughable. Look at those jokes Larry Holmes was fighting during his reign and even Tyson's early reign had a punch of pathetic fighters.
Valuev is a champ, Sam Peter was a champ, Ibrigamov was a champ,Maskiev was a champ, guys like Auston, Thompson, and Barrett have gotten shots, these guys are worse than what Tyson and Holmes fought against.
Well spoken, widow! Very good post! Anyone remembers an so called all time great like Hollyfield struggle against a bum called Bobby Cyzz??? Pah! Morrison,Moorer,McCall, Ruddick or Mercer would be no top dogs in today' s heavy weight division. All aforementioned fighters are more or less on Samil Sam's level.Nothing special at all. Even Thyson fought most of his career very average opposition(McNeeley,Seldon, and so on) back home in the usa. Fighters like Solis or Povetkin have been matched far tougher than those ancient fighters from long forgotten times. All in all today's heavy weight circus is much much more interesting and competitve than 15 years ago in my opinion.
the 90's Hevyweight scene was so immensely strong, it is hard to see it being that good ever again. I hope Tyson Fury lives up to his name though
So they are worse than the 10 guys who played musical charis with the WBA belt in the early 1980's? I thnk not. Look who got title shots against Holmes: Lorenzo Zanon Leeroy Jones Scott LeDoux Tex Cobb Scott Frank and there are others just as bad. You want to tell me with a straight face those guys are any better than Ibragimov, Thompson, Austin etc.? No way. The post Ali era was the absolute worst for Heavyweight Boxing. This was back when there was just the WBC and WBA not all the alphabet orgs we have now and those bums I listed above were getting title shots not at the WBO or IBO but at THE Heavyweight champion of the world.
