Summed up beautifully. I don't care what nationality someone is, I want to see young fighters capable of generating some legitimate excitement. Haye is about the closest thing right now, and Povetkin and Arreola are both still hype more than anything else. Ask a fight fan what young fighter they are excited to see, and I would be shocked if one of those three names was the first out of their mouth. Face it, the division IS weak.
Well said. Every time I read a post hailing the 90's as the HW golden era I wonder where these people were when all those fighters were still active. If this site was active in the 90's the threads on the HW's would look something like; "Moorer is a Glass Jawed Joke" "Lennox Lewis Is Better Than Tyson??:rofl:rofl:rofl" "Lewis' Glass Jaw Will Be Shattered By Tua" "Does Anyone Still Watch the HW's?" "Only in the 90's Could an Overweight Geriatric be Champion" "Hype Job Bowe Exposed by Polish Taxi Driver" etc.. The negative ctiticism of today's HW's is nothing worse than what was being said 10, 20, and 30 years ago. There will never be a shortage of people who enjoy complaining and unfortunately they tend to shout the loudest.
People fondly recall the Bowe-Holyfield trilogy as one of the greatest HW trilogies of all time. Nostalgic sentiments are not what lead us to believe that the status of the HW division in the 90's(or any other era) was substantially more impressive than it is now.
While I agree with you, there does seem to be a lack of tallent at the moment. I don't think you can deny that. If this isn't the case than the Klits are some of the Greatest of all time.
man im tellin u klitchko fans are the worst...they think george forman and ali woulda been murdered by guys like vitali n wlad...they really needa switch sports when they dont give all time greats and even atg hw any credit!!
I think Foreman of the 90 beat 90% of the fighters in that time. I also think Foreman of the 90's would lose to the Klitschko's, and maybe Chagaev.
Ok and go and look at Forman of the 70s...Ill take him by BRUTAL KO OVER WLAD CUZ WLADS CHIN...HE BEATS VITALI TOO!!! :bbb
There is a lack of superstars and good matches. We need more fights like Chambers-Peter. There are so many guys in line for a title shot that they are afraid to risk anything against worthwhile opponents and will be content fighting no hopers while waiting for their turn. So instead of Povetkin-Dimitrenko we get Povetkin-Sykes. These mandatories are ****ing up interesting fights. Especially when 90% of those mandatories are only in that position because their promoter pays the biggest bribes.
he won two belts in one fight, with the biggest punch never seen against Moorer more embarrassing is that Tommy Morrison won championships on two separate occasion (UD-ing George and TKO-ing Ruddick) I don't remember the pre Tyson heavyweight era so I cant comment on that, but I dont' see how people could have complained about 90's heavyweights when you got matchups like.... Holyfield-Bowe I, II, and III Bowe-Gollota I, & II Holyfield-Moorer I & II Moorer-Foreman Holmes-Mercer Mercer-Morrison Holyfield-Mercer Lewis-Morrison Morrison-Ruddick Mercer-Morrison Lewis-Holyfied I & II Holyfield-Tyson I & II Tyson-Ruddick I & II Lewis-McCall I & II McCall-Holmes Foreman-Holyfield Holmes-Holyfield These aren't near all ATG fights or anything, but name me 3 fights in the past 5 years in the heavyweight division that would make that list.
Did you really mean to include those fights in bold to your best of list? I also didn't agree with people's negative criticism of the HW's in the 90's but it was prevalent nonetheless. Also my point was that the lack of good fights at present is more due to the ridiculous demands of the boxing commissions than the lack of talent. There are many possible intriguing match-ups in the division that for one bull**** reason or another haven't been made. Also, you listed Mercer-Morrison twice, it was a good fight but not that good.
I think the HW division is slowly improving, but it would be nice if promoters would stop overprotecting their pupils so much. Also, the influx of new talent from the amateurs to the pros needs to happen. Guys like Timurziev and Camarelle would create a nice buzz around the division.
It never was that great. Even when you had talented guys like Witherspoon and Tubbs, they would get heavy from not training and then lose when they shouldn't have. I think heavyweights are the most overrated division ever.
