Kelly was ranked no1 by the IBF and had been for some time, he was RJJ's mandatory. He also got the fight as almost a personal favour the Jeff Fenech (who trained Kelly at the time) because Roy had met with Jeff during his filming for the Matrix in oz. Kelly sorta upset Billy Lewis to propel himself into the top 10 and beat him again to consolidate that spot. Even as an aussie Im not going to argue however that he did not deserve to be ranked the no1 contender and no doubt the IBF vice prezzo "Aussie" Ray Wheatley played a part in getting him that high, with such dismal opposition. Despite this performance, Kelly was an alright fighter and one of the best in oz at the time. He was better than the scared and confused version that showed up that night. Glen was a fighter who liked to dicatate the fight with his handspeed from the outside, much like Roy, you could almost say it was a clash of styles but thats stretching it I admit. So with Roy being soooo much better at it then him, Kunga was always going to look leagues below Roy,like most of the people Roy fought frankly.
go walk into incoming highway traffic, you ****rag. ****ing douchecanoe noobs infesting this board again
Impressive, but like many have said, it was a glancing blow in a vital area, landed on a guy that was ready to fall down from a stiff breeze. Cheers Tom
ewww talking about starting out on the wrong foot. not only did you start on the wrong foot but you also stepped in ****.
Exactly my thoughts. Though most in the US only saw that completely scared and outclassed version of him, Glen was a more than decent fighter and a solid contender and the world stage. Fenech gave him a horrible game plan - he tried to make him pressure Roy. Glen could never fight coming forward. And from memory, he ruptured his eardrum early in the fight (or it could have been that shot in the video?). In any case, he was a much better fighter than he looked that night. Roy was a freak.
It was a skilful KO of a **** opponent. If we want to talk about how good RJJ really was, watch this video instead: http://youtube.com/watch?v=83nbHy2KjhY
Two things that fascinate for me: 1 - The feint Jones sells with his eyes just before he moves right. 2 - He pivots and turns through the right handed punch with his left foot. That is, he's generating power with the oppposite side of his body...genius. I know that Kelly is not a world beater, but how does that impact on the astounding nature of the punch? Are great Ko's only about world class opposition? I think this KO is as special as anything i've seen.
Only 8/10? For a punch that fast firing through the opposite foot whilst turning your body into the punch that perfectly? Seems a little low... Did Roy look a little surprised to anyone else?
