Donaire should deffo be above Martinez on these lists. I can see the Ring dropping Pac to 2 and moving Floyd up. The General will go mental
He has fought at LMW tho. So really he would be jumpin up two divisions from the highest he has fought, like JMM did. Yes, both were at Welter, but Mayweather was rumoured to come into the ring at around 160, whereas Marquez was about 148. We have to take this into account IMO
Jmm - mp 9-10: mp better work in a close round 10-9: jmm good combinations and defence 10-9: controlled round by jmm picking mp apart 9-10: mp moving much better and landing frequently 10-9: jmm much better defence and better clean shots being landed 9-10: brilliant round for mp landing good clean shots. 10-9: close but clear round as both fighters step it up a notch. 10-9: punch perfect timing for jmm showing great defence and timing. 9-10: close round with mp getting the slight nod based on clean shots and effective aggression. 10-9: mp tried nicking the round but left it too late 9-10: jmm takes foot off the gas and mp edges it on aggression 9-10: good final push by mp as he edges the final round. My view on the fight. My rankings in light of this. Floyd Pac Jmm Martinez Donaire
I'm going by what I saw, not what I am being told I have seen. Mayweather goes in at number one by default for me now, I can't ignore the fact that he shut out the man who won the other night, it's not an ideal scenario wherein my number one is in there on the strength of his last performance but the situation must be assessed how it is. Mayweather has totally outclassed Marquez and then went on and beat a man who was top rated at his weight. Marquez is above Pacquiao, I just watched him beat him, I watched it twice, he definitely won, this is my list, and I create it independently of any pollution. Martinez and Donaire make up my top five. Mayweather Marquez Pacquiao Martinez Donaire what a fine top five that is by the way, boxing is fit and well. Best sport in the world, best sport ever.
I would say Marquez's two wins over Pacquiao are better than Floyds one win over JMM, Teeto :good :hey
Of course. That's not really affecting my list though, this isn't resume based, otherwise Manny would still be number one because he has the best resume in the world. This is current form based. Marquez has just beaten Manny Pacquiao but has recently been as outclassed as anything by Mayweather, who has then went and won against another top rated fighter. As I say, in an ideal world, the fighter who has just put on a great showing would be top of the list, because it is as I say, current form based. But there is something that makes me very uncomfortable about having JMM above Mayweather when everyone knows Mayweather is infinitely better than him. If you're asking me who is the number one fighter pound for pound in the world then my answer is Floyd Mayweather by default. If you're simply asking me who the best fighter in the world is then it's Floyd Mayweather hands down. You know I;m not a fan of his in any other sense than that I admore him as a fighter, just as I do Pacquiao, Donaire, Froch, Wlad, it's nothing personal. It's how I see it.
That's a fair and reasonable standpoint to take IMO. As I'm sure you'll agree that you understand mine as well :good
There's having trouble with Marquez, and then there's being clearly bested by Marquez. First 2 fights could have gone either way, this one should have only gone one way - to Marquez. That's why he deserves to be above Pacquiao.
I've just been reading through the thread now mate. What is your standpoint then Flea? I read you say Floyd was a cheap shotting part timer and that there are far more interesting and capable fighters than him in the world right now. I totally agree on the interesting element of your post, as most people know, I'm so pissed off with Floyd and Manny that I vent very often and very extremely. Unless they are either going to fight each other I wish them to **** off. It's terrible for boxing that they cannot deliver us this fight, ****s both of them, and that hurts me to say that because they've provided some great things for me. But it is what it is, **** them. So on your point of more interesting fighters than Floyd right now, yes I agree fully, the super six for example is so good for boxing, I love it. But on your point on there being more capable fighters out there than Floyd then I'm curious, because I think he is hands down the best fighter in the world personally. On the point of him being a pot shotter, I think it;s academic, I couldn't care if a fighter jumps around like a kangaroo and only uses one of his arms all night, if he is effective then he can just do that and get my praise as long as it is serving him well.
But would it put JMM above Floyd? Teeto makes a very good point. Whilst Marquez clearly getting the better of Pac' (again, but let's be honest this was the most comprehensive performance of their trilogy) is, IMO, a better win that Floyd's over Marquez, does Floyd having beaten Marquez with no hassle mean that, despite not having fought very often and his last fight being a train wreck, he would still be higher than Marquez? Teetos point is very convincing in fact now I think about it. Marquez has the better form and should be no.1 in terms of wins (the man at 135lbs as well let's not forget), but we know the no.2 or no.3 (Money) is the better man of the two in the ring. Does Floyd coming in over the weight and Marquez having not fought there before also make it a lesser win? Depends on what you factor into your criteria when judging a win I guess. Got some nice skunk today
As McGrain says, boxing is music, not maths. For me, Floyd is quality but does things I don't particularly like. He could've stepped it up against Marquez IMO, and I get bored quite a lot watching him to be honest. Against Shane, I thought he was at his best. Against Marquez, less so. Despite what JMM did to Manny, it doesn't mean Floyd had to fight the way he did. Him being 'part time' is not something I'll shift on. Two fights a year for the top guys is bad enough for me to take, one fight a year is sacrilege! And as you know, I like all kinds of fighters of all shapes, sizes and styles. The Ortiz fight was a shambles as well, and despite Ortiz being ranked highly in the division, that's not enough for me to accept he was particularly good or that the win values much merit. This just isn't the era for me Teeto I'm afraid.
One could also choose to think along these lines (and not really be faulted); 'I never rated the Marquez win for Foyd at welterweight, but after seeing what he just did to Pacquiao, I sure do now' as you say, it all depends on how you factor these things in,
Well as I say, I agreed with you on there being fighters that are more interesting than him, **** him and Pac, pricks. I was actually asking who are the fighters you said are more capable than him. More capable effectively meaning (unless we're splitting hairs) better than him I take it.
