How did you guys score the Manny Pacquiao vs. Agapito Sanchez bout from 2001? As most of you already know, the fight was stopped in the 6th round due to a cut caused by an accidental headbutt. The official scores were 57-55 Sanchez, 58-54 Pacquiao and 56-56. I had the fight 59-54 Pacquiao. How about you?
Dont remember scoring it mate..might go back and have a look for the sake of the thread. Didnt think there was a hell of a lot of in it overall at the time but thought the point deductions would have made it a no brainer...maybe Im remembering it wrong. One thing I know for sure Sanchez is one dirty SOB.
Yeah I actually just scored it. I watched it live years ago, but I don't think I scored it then. I had Pacquiao winning even without the point deductions, so that's where the controversy lies, if any. And yes, Sanchez was famous for his not-so-clean tactics in the ring.
Thought I could get away with watching it on the tube instead of searching through my collection for the fight...but alas only the first two rounds are up on there. Ive scored both for Sanchez which is sort of how I remember it starting it out. Manny is missing a lot and Agapito is doing very good work with his left hand. Amazing watching Manny back then...he has come such a long way. This is certainly not his prime weight IMO he looks just as fast and powerful up above lightweight but 10x more skilled and savvy.
Absolutely, I agree with you. Manny was nowhere near his best, but had a lot of raw material and was still a dangerous fighter back then. I actually scored round 1 even and round 2 for Sanchez and the rest for Manny. The whole fight is on youtube by the way.
It's all good, check it out if you get a chance. It wasn't anything special, I'm just curious who everyone thinks won the fight. It was pretty clear to me.
Sanchez Pacquiao 1.. 10 9 2.. 10 9 3.. 9 9 (This is debatable I understand but felt Manny was still falling short with a lot of his shots and getting countered pretty effectively with Agapito's left. A fighter doesnt get a round automatically if there is a point deduction against his opponent...the round is scored and deductions are done after that hence the drawn round). 4.. 8 10 5.. 9 10 (much closer then I remember though, Manny gave the impression he was taking over but actually I felt he got outlanded in this round, just his shots had more effect which closed the gap and gave him the round IMO but to tell you the truth Im not going to argue hammer and tong with someone who gave that to Sanchez..the crowd was getting very excited about blocked punches) 6..I dont even know how you score this round..both guys didnt do much but if I had to pick a winner Id go with Pac pretty much because he scored the only eye catching punch that buckled Sanchez a bit. 10-9 Pac that one. So the grand total comes to.....57-55 for Manny. Though I could see someone giving that 5th to Sanchez, you could just as easily give the 3rd to Manny. Didnt think there was much in it then...and I still maintain that. Neither a black eye or positive for Manny's record. A pretty inconclusive fight that he probably should have got the win for but certainly no robbery or anything.
Yeah I agree with that assessment. By the way, my round by round scorecard is as follows.... PACQUIAO SANCHEZ 1. 10 10 2. 9 10 3. 10 8 4. 10 8 5. 10 9 6. 10 9 59 54
Was a while back, but people now remember it as a white wash for Pacquiao which was far from the case. I remember it being a draw and/or Sanchez. However with the point deductions it favored Pacquiao and he was starting to come on to the later rounds so he would have gotten to Sanchez by the later rounds. I was fine with the scorecards, but I also agree that the fight was too short, Agapito was fighting dirty, and Pacquiao was too green at this point. This fight really doesn't reflect much of Pacquiao's true skills and abilities now as it is obvious Pac is the much better fighter and would destroy Sanchez now and most likely then having gotten the chance to finish the fight. Having said all that, I would also say the fight reflects some of Pac's weaknesses fighting defensive fighters, which doesn't make fighting him easy, but definitely will make for the most successful strategy.
I would have loved to have seen an Agapito Sanchez-Nedal Hussein undercard for a Pacquiao fight, around the mid 2000s. That would have been unbelievably bloody and nasty. :yep
