Yes, that's fair enough re Fury, who is really really massive. I think Usyk is truly special but that isn't proven yet, it's basically eye test + amateur results. But with Fury out of the equation, the other HWs are all either unproven or clearly flawed, and therefore are beatable.
Fury is unpredictable, and if he isn't focussed he punches himself instead of his opponent, and gets dropped by Cunningham. Otherwise I agree with you. The Wlad that Fury beat is better than anyone Usyk's faced and probably would beat Usyk handily too.
I thought Parker just nicked it, and that the scores were fair. I wouldn't have argued though if they'd given it to Ruiz, very close fight with lots of inactivity. Definitely not a robbery either way. If Ruiz had thrown more that would have been his fight for the taking. edit: Also, you can't really make a case for either guy winning by more than one or two points imo.
I forgot about Ortiz, however he's old and may well have trouble with a mover like Usyk. I don't really think the new version of Haye is particularly serious about dominating the HW division, he's just after easy fights or big $$$ imo. He hasn't been tested but I'd be surprised if he was as good as before. And Usyk is as big as him anyway.
Usyk looks very good but people are jumping the gun big time with talk of him being a top 5 at HW. Ortiz and Haye both knock him out.
The England team is coming for them on that front too. The transformation they've undergone under Jones is nothing short of amazing.
Jones is one of the world's leading coaches as you rightly point out. Lancaster was a glorified PE teacher/RFU company man...
Agreed. TBF Woodward wasn't great either he was just lucky to have a team led by big characters who knew how to manage themselves. I thought Wilko and co. won the 2003 WC despite Clive rather than because of.
Woodward's greatest asset was getting under the skin of the opposition coaches and unsettling them and their teams. Jones does this too but appears to have greater tactical nous. Clive had a better roster of players to choose from too, so Jones is a better coach, for sure. He just exudes confidence but manages to pass that on to his players without them becoming complacent. Seems like a decent bloke as well, but I bet he's a right c**t if you cross him.
Looking at the results and what 9 of us in my lounge picked, the spread is about bang on. I picked a draw, a couple had Parker by 1 and a couple had Ruiz by 1. It was close, very close. In terms of where to for Parker. Rest. The guys needs a bit of time, digest what has been nothing but 3 odd years of full on boxing, maturing, growing, travelling, training. He looked like last night like a fighter tired. That jab was missing at opportune moments, much like the Takam fight. They admitted that Takam training camp was too long, and I just think this fight and all the buildup sapped Parker. Ruiz on the otherhand just didn't have the stamina, and fought a very clever fight, nullifying Parkers strengths. I hope he really gets another opportunity. Ruiz will definitely give a number of the top guys a real working over. I will obviously be a bit more subdued on here, my countryman won NZ's first ever HW title, but until he defends it, I don't think it'll sit well with alot of people.
This fight was an embarrassment to true HW boxing and neither fighter deserved to win or deserved a purse. It looked like a glorified sparring session.
115-113 to Parker for me. If you asked me who was looking like they would win at the 5th round I would have shed a little tear and said Ruiz however in the 6th he was starting to slow and in some ways that made me even more sad as Parker started coming into frame as being able to win it but not because of better skills - or should I say, Ruiz's appetite is the real winner on the day. A small part of me wishes Parker lost and went back with some retrospective and had compelling reason to work on things instead of being encouraged for his approach. I hope they take a solid rest and take a good hard look. This fight had a lot of promise to be a fun one but was quite disappointing and not the way I wanted to see a kiwi get a title
I had ir 155-113 to Parker but I was pretty drunk and struggling to maintain interest. I went into the fight thinking it was much closer to 50/50 than most people (I put a little bet on Ruiz) but that neither guy was particularly good. Still feel the same.
