This is more or less the same as what I figured last night I think... didn't write it down but that feels on the same vein
Just finally saw the full fight. Wasnt the best vid either and I dont know why the only one I could find earlier had Russian commentary. Anyway....Ruiz seemed to land more early...rds 1-3, then Parker looked to have found the range and kindof changed the pace and swept 4-9. Ruiz came on strong and took 10, but Parker outwrestled him or kept him at the end of his jab or R cross in rds 11 and 12. Great fight actually, with both fighters able to do their work, but Andy couldnt hurt Joseph while even looking leaner, Andy still looked bothered whenever Parker threw to the gut. either of these guys decimates either Chisora or Whyte. Either one stops em in a rd or 2 if they bring that head low hook winging crap into the ring against them
No idea how you came to that conclusion watching both those fights. Parker would have been smoked by Chisora tonight.
Yes. Everytime he is in the ring with a shorter pressure fighter he tends to freeze a bit. I think he likes moving forward with the jab, letting that set things up. The jab isn't as effective when he is circling backwards. Looking towards the future, most of the HWs are tall apart from Povetkin, Ortiz and Haye...also Chisora/Whyte.
Didn't score it but my impression was Ruiz by a hair. Certainly not a robbery by any stretch and, as I said, I didn't actually score it, but I thought he did more and better work - but not by much. I have no problem with Parker getting a close nod, nor would I have argued if it was scored a draw.
I just watched the fight ... and it looked pretty even to me. Parker getting the nod only just seems ok, but a rematch with Ruiz would be a good thing (maybe in the States). Ruiz showed he can go 12 rounds and Parker didn't panic after a weak start and seemed to gain confidence in the second half. I sort of think both fighters will get a lot out of the experience. Parker at 24 may well be more formidable with some experience internalized and with a big fight behind him. A rematch vs Ruiz outside NZ would be a risk for him but in the long run could be a good move, unless he wants to navigate into some unification fight. As a general sports fan, who follows boxing, I have to respect 5 fights a year, two being against similar level opposition. No pull-outs or delays (or disrespectful antics). The fights he signs up for actually happen. Both he and Joshua are cool in that respect.
Yep. Me too. Anyone else think (optimistically) that it looked like a tired Parker? The explosiveness that he used to display, and which he needs to be top-level, was almost entirely missing. I hope a good rest can bring it back, he definitely needs it. That was not a champion's performance although he won fairly.
A bit. We were discussing during the fight that he seemed a bit uneasy about throwing his right, not sure if seeing too much to make ourselves feel better - but. It did feel a bit like the game plan may have been partly to drip feed the effort and slowly turn up later in the fight where Ruiz was unlikely to be able to fire at full force, which did work. Whenever Ruiz turned up then Parker did too, and vice-versa. I was always worried about his biggest fight being the last of a heavy year - a rest, some reflection and a slower paced year would be a good idea I think.
