Rewatched his "Beyond the Glory" today, and was more moved than I ought to admit to any of you guys... parts of his story remind me of my father's almost verbatim.

In any case, this series pretty much always ends on an upbeat note and paints the subject in a relatively positive light, accurately or not.

Now of course, Larry's temper led him into the Rocky quote and his WWF moment with Berbick, and as a salt of the earth figure with a humble background, he probably wasn't as well equipped as others to sidestep the minefield of race in America. But at the same time, he was also the heavyweight champion of the world, not a child. He also worked too hard at his craft to make me think that he would have been comfortable viewing himself as a passive victim of circumstances beyond the ring.

To what degree, if any, do you hold him responsible for the way his career developed? Would cutting ties with King, or anything else, have helped to defuse the racial tension he experienced and suffered from? During his career and now in his retirement, what were and are your thoughts on the man on a personal level?

I love how, of all the things in the world, Larry tried to DROPKICK Berbick!

I don't know Larry Holmes personally and he's quite a private person, so I can't make a full assessment of his character, but he manifested a lot of different characteristics in his life: he could be reverent and kind, but he also had a very strong predisposition to bitterness. However, I do know that he sniffs his nose at Lennox's jab and looks down on Lennox, so that's one reason to dislike him!

As far as Holmes the boxer goes, he's one of my favourites. He was a boxer with skill who wasn't afraid to box and fight rather than run; he was a man of huge courage; he had the clean-punching work-off-the-jab style that I love to watch; his bouts were almost always exciting and he was robbed both times against Spinks. :bbb

He comes across as bitter and a bit of an ******* in public.

However, you don't hear many bad things about him personally. Legal troubles, mistreating people, etc...He had an interview with The Ring a little while ago and the interview stated that he thinks a lot of what Holmes may say is just a front and defense mechanism and underneath it all he's a different person.

Away from the media he is a great, down to earth person. He will be the first person to come over and greet you in his club/restaurant, and will give people a beer on the house (if they're friendly or having a rough time). In the gym he treats everyone with respect, helps people out, and has a good time. He will also sign for anyone and everyone, the one day he even brought his camera in, took pictures with everyone in the gym, and gave them back to the person individualy signed. Contrary to how he acts around the media, he often gives fighters tons and tons of credit in the gym.

In the media he is a D-Bag most of the time, puts other fighters down, and complains a lot. I don't understand why, but he is completely different when the media isn't around.

I believe he is bitter over the negative treatment he received in the media after he replaced Muhammed as the dominant heavyweight in the ring without the colorful quotes and when he was attempting to break Rocky Marciano's record. However,I have a bunch of friends that used to participate in his softball tournament in his hometown of Easton,Pennsylvania(he basically owns a chunk of that town) that have told me that,in person, he is as dead on as they come and that he's a stand-up guy of the highest order.

Yeah, he owns quite a bit. He recently sold one of his building for just over $5 million.

He's spent his whole career trying to pull off a decent Muhammad Ali impression and failed miserably - it only works if you have a natural charm and Holmes is just a bloke.

He's one of the rare fighters:someone who is successful in the ring while preparing for life after boxing.Good for him.

Larry does come off as bitter. I thought it was amusing in the Ringside: Tyson episode how he kept trying to explain that the knockout only happened because "my arm got caught in the ropes."

Haven´t seen much of how he act´s outside of the ring apart from some interview and he sounds bitter. As a boxer he´s one of the best, little bit of Ali copycat, in a good way. I liked his way of moving and that jab was lethal.

Some people just do not make a good impression on T.V., I think Larry was misunderstood and got bitter ( I dont know why) he expressed bitterness but he had a lot of help and connections and got away with a lot. Larry was a street kid and I like that part about him, he shot from the hip. He was a good family man and husband and did not embarriss anyone outside the ring just got angry and racial at times when it was not needed.
