Oh, there are Latinos on my Top10 too :good Yep, Max Schmeling is my favourite, not because he is German though. Not even for his boxing career but because of his life. The most impressive person in boxing history imo. He wasn´t called "the good human of Hollenstedt" in his last years for nothing.
Acually ive only grazed the surface there are a WHOLE looooooooooot of boxers i admire that i havent listed. Many of the guys i listed are from the West Coast(like Me) and fighters i have met or become acquainted with. Didnt Max become a rich man after and helped Joe Louis out? also didnt he save some Jewish kids or hide them out during the War?
Ah, I don´t have that kind of local patriotism. I admire fighters not where they are from. Max did many, many good things. He helped out Jou Louis and paid for his funeral, he also paid some of Langford´s ambulance bills when he was found by some journalist in NY. He did not only help those two kids but quite a few more during the Nazi regime and stepped in against Hitler and Goebbels themselves more than once to protect his Czechen wife and Jewish manager. He himself never talked about it, this actions were always brought up by others. When he asked why he said because it isn´t worth talking about, everybody would have done these things. He also didn´t become rich just like that, he worked hard for it. He had two own successful businesses before becoming head of Coca Cola Germany. After WW2 he was the biggest benefactor of post war Germany until he died. After his wife died in the late 80s he gave most of his wealth to charity and when he died the rest followed. The best biography I have read of him is the most recent: Schmeling - 1905-2005. Don´t know if it´s available in English though. btw. they just showed Schmeling KOing Louis on TV on a history programm over here
Muhammad Ali Erik Morales Julio Cesar Chavez Willie Pep Sugar Ray Leonard Roberto Duran Pernell Whitaker Prince Naseem Hamed Sugar Ray Robinson Joe Calzaghe Thomas Hearns (OK, I cheated, there`s 11) The top 2 are set in stone, the rest can be switched around in almost any order without complaint :good
