Aside from Max Baer, and Jimmy Braddock, when do you believe it most measured up to its reputation for power?

During their brief rematch? Joe unloaded only one in mid ring before the deluge, and Max countered it [Schmeling's only good looking moment in that return].

If you're referring to their first bout, I'd have to review the opening third of the match prior to the fourth round knockdown which turned things decisively in Max's favor.

Tommy Farr might be my alternative choice upon review. It was reportedly early in the match that each injured their right hands, turning it into a jabbing contest. While both had their right eyes marked up from the jabs of the other, Farr clearly sustained considerably more severe facial damage.

Just now, I looked at some closing round action from Louis-Farr, and yes, Joe's jab was clearly much the sharper and more effective as time wound down. His right eye was black, but not really swollen, while Tommy's face was a bloody mess from two jab induced cuts under his right eye, and another cut under his left eye. As it was a very clean fight, this was all punch induced damage. In a fight to the finish, or maybe even a scheduled 20 rounder [which Louis would later have for Pastor II and Simon I], Joe would have eventually stopped Farr on jab inflicted cuts. He clearly had much more left than Tommy at the end.

That's the word my girlfriend uses to describe herself as aspiring to, yet she loves to laugh at comedy about bodily functions.:patsch [She does manage to be a lady with class in her personal conduct though, appropriately reflective of her societal roots. But a debutante from Texas is not considered a debutante in certain Atlantic states, as she's pointed out to me more than once.]

:oops:Yeah, maybe I should use an edit filter to automatically remove proper punctuation and other correct grammar, one which allows only four letter words and other profanities, while blocking annoying things like capitalization. [Does language like mine really belong on a boxing website? A lot of posters here seem to be fans of Ulysses, by James Joyce, or the correspondence of Fred Allen.]

Reflecting on the Louis jab, it was far too deeply ingrained into his early development to ever be abandoned as a primary weapon, but as far as his commitment to consistently unloading it with full force, that may have been compromised forever after by Schmeling I. It did carry him through his post title comeback though, along with his hook, as his reflexive use of his right and combination punching abandoned him. Does "Chappie" allow this deterioration to take place?

Jack Blackburn was only 59 when he died in April 1942, heavily dissipated from drink. I wonder how Joe's subsequent career might have unfolded if his father figure in boxing remained alive and well for another decade. Manny Seamon was a fine trainer, but Louis was not going to improve anymore without Blackburn in his corner, regardless of whether or not he continued to defend the title during wartime. Of course as we know, Joe would not defend again after Blackburn's death until Conn II, over a year after the war ended. In hindsight, Louis could well have retired after Simon II without the financial issues which dogged him after. [After Blackburn's death, he may well have wished he could.]

Tommy Loughran, Teddy Yarosz and Billy Soose practically made their careers off their left jabs.
