Agree on the Taylor situation. At first I was like "wtf? dumb stoppage" but the ref did ask Taylor if he was okay and there was no response so it's fair enough. This one's not gonna make me very popular here, but I don't think the ref should've taken a point away from Dirrell against Froch. For me, the holding was nowhere near enough to warrant it. I also think he should've taken a point away from Froch for repeated rabbit punching. Huck against Povetkin is another one where the ref should've had a word with Huck about rabbit punching. It's banned for a very good reason and refs let them get away with it way too much. Prizefighter on friday...I think most of the stoppages were premature. I understand they have to protect the fighters, but British refs do take it a bit too far IMO. McPhilbin against Enzo Mac if I remember correctly was also a shambles.
Was that the Enzo fight that got stopped with Enzo being perfectly fine? Not sure who he fought against but i do remember being absolutely shocked that it was stopped..... im fully aware with Enzos history that you are careful but nothing even landed.
I got mixed up. That was a different fight I think. In the McPhilbin fight there was an issue with the time keeping. I don't remember Enzo's opponent when he got stopped prematurely, but I remember it being a shocking stoppage.
yeah that's the one. Probably THE worst stoppage I've ever seen. I think it was disgraceful and honestly I don't understand why incidents like this keep happening and it seems like nothing is done about it. I remember there was outrage when it happened but soon after people forget about it and move on. This guy is still refereeing? How? [yt]0oDnQ0TkpiA[/yt] Calzaghe also racked up some questionable stoppages early in his career. I remember that highlights vid you posted. Some comedy stoppages in there
That Calzaghe vid always cracks me up and the music makes it better. Will find it and the one where no one knows what hell the ref is doing. As for IJL and Enzo for me IJL went in with preconcieved thoughts on Enzo and his durability. And it played a major part in it he panicked and didn't know how to get himself out of it and knew he made a big mistake. Why do they get away with it?. I don't know it's ridiculous but i'd say it's down to rep and also fact there's not enough 5 star referee's here. Reason i say that, He ref'd 2 fights back to back one was a 8 rounder and the other was a 10 rounder. On the night he must of ref'd at least 4 fights and that's a lot under the lights and the duration of the fights. I think the board know they can't afford to let go of ref's even if there having mare's week in week out..
Just to expand on my point and BTW not defending these ref's and the board by no means. But that night in Olympia i picked up right away that IJL was ref'ing two 10 round contests back to back (just checked it was Ochieng vs Maxwell/Ryder vs O'Kane). To me it didn't make much sense but that night there was 7 professional shows in England. I think there stretched for ref's personally..
It's not a legit KO cos you've called stopped boxing, It's not a DQ because punch was thrown around the time you have to use common sense here surely and opt for a NC as the fight cannot go on.
The Chavez/Taylor stoppage was fine, Taylor was completely gone at the end of the 11th round I think, but was surviving on instinct until the last 30 seconds of the 12th until Chavez nailed him with a biggie which sent him reeling. Even then, Taylor could have clung on or got on his bike, but he didn't, got hammered again and was rightly stopped. The biggest tragedy is how his life panned out after that, but that's not Steele's fault, his responsibility is to protect the fighters.... for 36 minutes, which he did. As for Froch vs Dirrell, I'd have taken a point from Dirrell much earlier. It was probably the referee being so lax in that respect that allowed Froch to steal it, because Dirrell really came to life afterwards.
I would of taken 2 points from Dirrell that night, It was over a 100 times he ''clinched'' and sometimes without any punches being thrown between the 1st clinch and doing it again. The ref was spot on that night, It's a world title fight and Dirrell only wanted to fight when it suited him. He created that problem for himself and TBH all that holding was stopping Froch working even if he was ineffective he deserve the chance to try fight not be held consistently. Anyways lads stop ducking the Barker vs Samuels one :yep.
I agree, if one fighter has got the other into a position where they can't continue, no matter how many seconds left in the fight, they deserve the W
I was watching a fight the other day where a lad got an accidental low blow in the bollocks, was unable to continue and got the TKO loss, an NC, however unsatisfactory that is is the right decision in those circumstances.
