I know the Mayweather drama stole the show this weekend but we had a blue chip possible future star and titlist fight this weekend

And unlike his last few opponents he faced a guy with a pulse who could throw punches

but to say Gomez was a real challenge is a stretch, I believe Alvarez should be facing world level challengers not blimped up guys who are over matched

I actually came away more impressed with Gomez than Alvarez, I had it close dont entirely remember the score but it was a close one

he had Alvarez respect who was much more passive than we are used to, Alvarez showed good defense and rolled his shoulders at times displaying some good skills

he was very wide open to the right hand Gomez could land it often but he didnt utilize it enough his right over the top landed cleanly at times but Gomez usually came in too low and was not able to deliver it right

I thought the stoppage was kind of poor too, Gomez was dazed but the last few shots missed the target, though I do feel Gomez should have taken a knee something too many fighters do not do when hurt

i think saul took his time. he knew gomez was not a threat. he was getting some good time in the ring and stopped him when the time came

I honestly thought he looked average at best, I mean let's face it Gomez is trash, we all remember how Cotto brutally destroyed him, but until the time of the stoppage Gomez looked to be in control for the majority of the fight, Canelo looked scared and sluggish, I'm guessing because he was a super-middle weight on fight night...

At this point I would favor Erislandy Lara, Angulo and Vanes over him, I like him but he is starting to look more and more like Victor Ortiz..

Alvarez looked a full weight division bigger than Gomez in there. The size difference was quite stark.

I think now's the time to start fighting those kind of opponents. He's still a bit 'green', but he shows great potential and it's about time he stepped up. In the near future he has to prove that he can also do it vs the top dogs.

Maybe another Andre Berto IMO. Looking like a monster against people who souldn't be there but will probably flop when he fights a true top 10 (**** Ryan Rhodes) 154 pounder.

Against Gomez he almost seemed like he had no idea that a fighter could throw a jab. Gomez was making him look confused just by poking a jab out there.

Strong but ships too many. I'd like to see him in with Kermit.

thats because he was...gomez has never been close to being a 154 pound fighter....hes never beaten anyone ever ranked at 154, only time he was ever considered a non welterweight, is when he would come in over the welterweight limit...so it was a farce of a fight in regards to a championship defense ...but typical by any standards these days

You can call me a hater all you want but if you do, you are in denial. I said canelo was real green when larry mosley whupped his ass and everyone was in denial back then. Canelo is a mexican vinny paz if that even. If he wasnt ready to defend against top 10 opponents in his weightclass they shouldnt have given him the belt. If you wanna follow a real MEXICAN prospect at 154, check out RODRIGO GARCIA. Rodrigo fights for toprank and has real boxing skill not bull**** hype. He would easily outbox the mexican vinny paz right now.

Berto has alot more skill than canelo. He could probably step up and knock canelo out. I see what your saying though. He definately also had alot of handpicked opponents.

Try to fight a dvd of canelo vs larry mosley. Larry mosley won atleast 8 of the 10 rounds of that fight. Canelo was so cufused in that fight in 2 of the final rounds he laid on the ropes for 2 mins of the round and just took punches without even coming back.

I guess everyone missed that fight.

I didnt like his defense, to much got trough, he was flat footed as well. Taking gomez very lightly, if gomez had power canelo would have been layed out.
I want to see cotto vs canelo.

I won't call you a hater, but what makes you so confident that a guy with 10 pro fights will easily beat another guy with 38 pro fights and no losses? I agree that Alvarez is overhyped, but to say he will be easily outboxed by another youngster with 10 pro fights is a bit over the top. Alvarez surely has flaws, but he definitely has talent and potential.

Overrated, Cotto would whoop his ass, as for calling him another Berto. Berto is quite Flawed but he would **** up Canelo if he moved up IMO.

If Gomez had power Alvarez wouldn't have fought that way.

He knew Gomez couldn't hurt him. It seemed to me that he was basically toying with Gomez from the start, trying a few things in the ring. He more or less approached the fight as a sparring session.
