Your Thoughts on Berto???

What does being able to chase down Steve Forbes have to do with Berto's development as a fighter? There are some real monsters at 147 and believe me, Berto won't need to chase them down cuz they'll be right there.

I felt like I was watching a replay of Bradley/Cherry.

 

Defense. He needs to improve his defense and fast if he wants to get to the top. I thought Forbes was hitting him with too many clean shots for my tastes. Other than that I was impressed with Andre. His handspeed, stamina and accuracy where all impressive. He was hitting Forbes at will and that's not something you can just do against a very good defensive fighter like Forbes. His uppercut was definitely the punch of the night, IMO.

All in all, a pretty good performance from Berto. Although I think he could've done better. Cover up boy, cover up!!

Berto looked like he is the future of the division. Fast, powerful and defensively slick which should be noted by all of his critics. His common criticisms are his chin and that he takes too many punches. Now obviously Forbes has no power so Berto's chin was never at risk however Forbes is a crafty boxer whose accurate with his punches and Berto showed that his defense has improved.

The rumor is that he will take on his mandatory Collazo which would certainly be his toughest test but imo not a serious threat. I personnaly want him to pursue a Judah fight who would be his fastest and strongest opponent to date. An ability to avoid and take Zab's punches would go along way in silencing his critics. And fighting Zab who is still somewhat of a casual boxing fan draw would do alot for Berto's name; especially if the fight took place at MSG.

 

you're right, it took a fellow WW giant in quintana to beat williams. i also think valuev should be forced to move up a division

 

This is only the second time I've seen Berto fight and in all honesty I'm still not impressed.

Maybe it's just a case heightened expectations due to all the hype, but as of right now I don't think the top guys(Margo, Williams, Cotto) are losing any sleep over him!

 

In all honesty, he shouldn't go near Margo and the top WWs at this point in time. He still has some work to do in his game. Collazo as his next opponent is a pretty good move IMO and another step up. He just needs to take things in stride, he might be better off for it.

 

I think he fought that way deliberately.
In his fight vs Michael Trabant, which was a clear mismatch, he often cornered himself without being pressured, giving the other guy room and time to bang a little, so as to test and improve his defence.
He tries different styles in more or less "safe" fights, in order to get better and ready to face the division's elite. I don't know if he will be able to beat the elite, though, time will tell.
He has shown he doesn't have a problem mixing it up and stand toe-to-toe and trade even with a decent puncher. If you watch his fight vs David Estrada you'll know what I mean.

 

Berto showed he is among the better crowd in the welterweight division. He should be stepping up now. One thing that impressed me, besides the obvious handspeed and stamina, was his ability to adapt to the fight quickly after round 2. He showed some good competitiveness in him and good natural fighter's instincts. In my opinion, he will do the same to Collazo and has a good chance of knocking Collazo out. If Shane Mosley's hand speed bothered Collazo, Berto's hand speed will as well and will be the main factor in the fight, especially if Berto shows up in the same kind of condition as he did against Forbes. Among the current welterweights in the division, I cannot think of one being as active as Berto was, while still holding that type of hand speed and pop in his punch in the 12th round. Verdict: Berto > Cintron and Collazo at this point.
One dislike is his cocky-like attitude in the ring... it is a bit annoying. Either way, he shows to be very competitive minded.

 

I agree he is still a little green for the top guys, his defense is just a bit too leaky. But IMO if you hold a belt (WBC being one of the better ones) you have to be willing to fight anyone else out there in that division, no more tune ups and "learning" experiences. As boxing fans we shoud demand the best fight the best, but a lot of people seem to be giving Berto a free pass for his next few fights while he gets up to speed.

I think Margo, CLottey, Williams are a step too far for Berto right now, though he would maybe have a punchers chance against Cotto due to his slightly weaker chin. Stil I think we need to seem him tested, would like to see him in against Cintron or Quintana.

Who cares if you're impressed or not . . . that was a very good win for Berto. He passed his first "real" test.

Forbes is still a solid class A fighter despite being out of his prime . . . and anybody who could outwit Forbes deserves props. :deal

 

first time i've seen him last night and I was quite impressed. Forbes asked questions of him and he answered them. I think he should take a few more good learning fights before taking on the best in the division, just a bit more high level experience.

 

He's a KO ready to happen ... I don't think that he'll ever be on the level of the elite welterweights ... I was so happy that at the begining of the fight for Merchant to state that.

 

Berto continues to fight opponents im not interested in. Trabant, Rodriguez, Forbes and now Callazo? Callazo is another guy you dont look good against. Why is Callazo Nr1 @ WBC anyway after losing to Hatton and Mosely and beating...no one !
