His pro resume doesnt - and cant - match up, so to say he's not fought an elite is not fair - he's fought and destroyed very good fighters - some of who have even come close to being destroyed - the best brave enough to step in there with him But from what you've seen, especially if you've followed his vaunted am career - how do you rate Triple G? How do you see him matching up with the ATG 160lbers - Hagler, Monzon, Hopkins etc Again, in this day and age of rampant cherrypicking and ducking, his professional resume simply cant match up, but in terms of what he brings, how do you rate him?
Burt Beinstock A classic forum legend is his biggest fan. Is alt accounts include GGGUnbeatable, GGG, tripleGGG, Godlovkin.
You can't mention him in the same breath as past ATG......yet. Time will tell. He is no doubt a bone crushing puncher and can take a good punch to the chin. In his last fight it looked like to be body shots were bothering him. Let's see what happens once he fights an elite fighter.
He's one of the most talented men that division has seen in years. But raw talent without suitable competition doesn't build much of a legacy. Unfortunately he suffers from "Larry Holmes syndrome."
Yes GGG's opponents don't measure up to the opponents of a Hagler. or Zale, or LaMotta in the modern age. Fair enough...But pray tell me is this Golovkin's fault ??? A fighter can only beat whoever is a contemporary of his, no less and no more....I have been accused on ESB of being a sentimentalist favoring great fighters of my youth...Such as SRR, Tony Zale, Jake LaMotta, Willie Pep, Ike Williams, Beau Jack etc. Now when I state that an Alexis Arguello, GGG, a Kovalev, and this new sensational flyweight Roman Gonzalez stacks up very favorably with the great "oldtimers" of my youth, they snicker "look at their opposition" ! True, but talent like GGG's transcend era's...
Perry, can you envision a catcher like Vito Antuofermo lasting 15 rounds with triple GGG as Hagler allowed in 1979 ?...I can't. You say in his ko of Monroe, bodyshots were bothering GGG". Did he sag, fall, or rope-a-dope after these shots ? Heck no...Tell me P, the name of the "elite" middleweight you think would test him today, to see if GGG is made of stern stuff ?... There is none today and it is not Golovkin's fault...As for Ward, GGG is under no obligation to prove his middleweight greatness by tackling lightheavyweights like Andre Ward. He very well may be one of the great middleweights of the modern times, before our very eyes...
He is unproven. I am not impatient. Let's see what the future holds especially when he gets into a tough fight.
I personally think that he is ATG material. I am ready to stick my neck out at this stage. It looks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck.
There's plenty to like, I just frown, for everyone's sake, that this 33-year-old may be using his prime years up against men who can only verify truisms. This thoughtful destroyer continues to march through not-so hostile territory. Due to politics and the amount of hair-splitting required these days to get two signatures down the future looks...so-so. There are fighters out there. Canelo (who is something of a pretend 154 lbs. fighter given his in-ring weight) could easily go up to middle for a real blockbuster. And then of course, in an ideal world, Andre Ward could throw down the gauntlet at 168 lbs. for another genuine super-fight. I wasn't too impressed with Gennady last time out though he essentially stopped boxing because he knew he could. He macho'ed his opponent. He said "OK Mr 6 KO's, do your worst." He knew Munroe would not last the distance. This 3-4 fight per year schedule is a great example to all champions, but with no possibility of a Cotto or Canelo next it's difficult to know who can step up without that asterisk next to the Kazakh's record doubling in size.
GGG won't fight Ward or anyone else at 168lbs. Also probably needs to move up to get paydays because Cotto and Canelo want none of him. In turn he wants none of anyone at 168 or 175 although he walks around dam near as heavy as Kovalev. dude is not fighting anywhere close to his natural walking around weight...
