Great, exciting fighter at lightheavy, but a solid capable Heavyweight, who got extremely lucky beating a below par Holyfield. But was he just lucky at Heavyweight? Where do you rate him in the heavyweight lists? Could he have Done even better in other eras perhaps?
How was he extremely lucky to beat Holyfield? He put in a great effort to win against a Holyfield who in his previous fight had put on one of his best performances in winning the title back from Big daddy Bowe.
Holyfield has a heart attack and his liver and kidneys were shutting down. Also dislocated a shoulder. Also, Holy should have won except that a couple of judges scored the round where Holy knocked him down as even. To answer the question, Moorer wasn't that good. A bit of power at heavy, and the faux-southpaw stance.
Never agreed with the verdict in the first Holyfield fight and then made history being sparked by Foreman. Good fighter who was mentally flawed and consequently overachieved at Heavyweight.
This is one of the beefs I have brought up again and again. In round 2, Moorer was clearly winning bar the knockdown. All the cleaner punching was done by Moorer who was forcing Holy to give ground. The KD came late on and was pretty much all Evander did effectively in the round. A knockdown usually comes when a fighter is winning the round and the KD is that extra flourish which sees the knocked down fighter lose a point. So the cards go from 10-9 to 10-8. But in this instance, the fighter who gets knocked down - Moorer - otherwise wins the round 10-9 on all fair cards. The point deduction takes it to 9-9, 10-10 on the ten point must system. You'd have to award Holy two points for the knockdown to give him the round. An even round seems eminently fair to me. Surprised also at the level of Holyfield's illnesses in the fight. Heart attack and liver and kidneys shutting down? Blimey.
Moorer was pretty damn good. Even Holyfield didn't toy with Foreman the way Moorer did. Not sure if Moorer left Steward or vice versa but MM went from a marauding heavyweight in the Stewart and Cooper bouts to a more subdued boxer/puncher after Atlas became trainer. One thing was for sure, in order to thrive at heavyweight Moorer needed to save that chin from being shattered so a change of style was irrefutable.
Blimey, Evander wasn't well, was he? I hadn't realised it was that bad. Perhaps we should let him have round 2 after all then as he was fighting with all that going on.
Naw. Most including Two of the judges had it 88-83 Moorer with Ford having it 86-85 which was very generous of him. Moorer was inning pretty clearly until he made a huge mistake of standing in front of George in the 10th and paid dearly for it. Regarding Moorer, he was a very talented fighter that could have been a lot better had he kept his weight down. He was a very good combination puncher when he was under 220 but after the 2nd Holyfield fight he started coming in at 240 or above and became more of a plodding one shot at a time kind of guy. He would likely be in the hall of fame had he fought Hill and Maske at Light-Heavyweight. I believe he would have starched both.
