This is an immortal series considered one of the greatest rivalries of all time. I haven't seen any discussions on it though. Anybody have a favorite? I-Robinson was the champ but had yet to come across a challenger of Fullmer's style and durability since returning to the ring two years earlier. Robinson resisted stubbornly and put up a courageous display but was beaten decisively by the rugged Fullmer in a fight reminiscent of Ali's performance in the FOTC. II-After a lot of brutal, two-sided exchanges and a powerful low blow from Fullmer in round two, the Sugar Man KO'd the Utah Cyclone for the only time in his career with a punch destined to become a legend. III-This fight would prove to be even more brutal than the previous two as Robinson outboxed Fullmer in a fight fast developing into a brawl. Due to a late rally Fullmer was lucky to get a draw. IV-The most anti-climactic of their series, their final meeting would not prove to be any less action-filled than their other tilts. Robinson fought bravely but was the clear loser in a non-stop 15-round war. Both finished bleeding heavily. It was the classic matchup of boxer vs. pressure fighter that produced four unique, thrilling, yet tactical fights.
Reading a 50's Boxing Illustrated last week, it seems many thought SRR should have re won the title again after fight3.
I have always thought so myself. Officially Fullmer won the series, but in reality the series was a draw.
yes, it's unbelievable. Of course, he probably would have lost the title right away the last time and badly.
I thought Fullmer could and should have been DQd in the first fight. He fought dirty as hell. When asked why he allowed Fullmer to get away with so many fouls the ref said "Thats the only way he knows how to fight." I thought Robinson was robbed in the third fight. The fourth fight is just sad as Robinson is clearly way past his prime. Seeing the ref allow Fullmer to just keep blasting away at Robinson after the bell is infuriating.
just the same I'm glad Fullmer didn't get DQ'd in the first fight; the fact that Robinson lost the title and regained it for the fourth time, and in such a dramatic fashion made all the more amazing
