    ........the seventies,eighties,and nineties.

    Mine are -

    1970s - Ali,Monzon and Duran.
    1980s - Hagler,Leonard and Chavez
    1990s - De La Hoya,Whitaker and Jones

The '70s were easy to figure out. Pretty much gimmees, but the following decades were a lot tougher. I'm always changeing my mind.

Hard to argue with the 70s, I`d agree there.

The 80s you might argue Whitaker & Hearns have as much right as Hagler & Chavez, I`m not saying I disagree with your list but its more debateable than the 70s list IMO.

90s I might agree, not sure about Oscar tbh but definitely Whitaker & Jones.

Tough ones to call, are n't they ? A few people have said to me that I should have picked Mike Tyson as one of the eighties candidates, but he did n't have the longevity of the ones that I mentioned.

Both Tyson & Holmes are fair calls, 2 of the best ever HWs & the majority of their best stuff is in this decade, its just that they are up against some of the best ever p4p fighters in Leonard, Chavez, Whitaker, Hagler & Hearns, great decade for boxing.

You're getting no argument here. I might put Tyson instead of Hagler, but only might.

    70s - Duran, Ali, Monzon
    80s - SRL, Hagler, ...
90s - Whitaker, Jones Jr, De La Hoya

Yeah, I'd agree with you for the most part. IMO, 3rd place from the 80s is the only difficult one to decide.

Thomas Hearns, Michael Spinks, Julio Cesar Chavez - even Salvador Sanchez could conceivably be there considering the big wins he had in a short space of time.

At gunpoint, I'll go with Michael Spinks, seeing as two of the real key victories in the careers of Hearns (Hill) and Chavez (Taylor) came in the 90s.

Ali had a crappy 76-80 so why can't Tyson get by on his work from 85-89?

Not Whitaker IMO. Wins over Ramirez, Haugen and Roger Mayweather don't really come anywhere close to matching the achievements of Hagler and Chavez in that decade.

I don't view longevity as important here. Surely the work done in the decade should be judged on merit, nothing else.

Sal Sanchez was only active 1980-82, but he earned impressive and important wins over Gomez, Lopez (twice), Nelson, Laporte, Castillo, etc - he is rightly viewed as an ATG for this run.

His achievements within the decade in question are much greater than those of many fighters who fought from before 1980 to after 1990.

    Good posting Pop.

The third spot in the 80's is wide open imo.

Could make decent cases for the likes of Sanchez, Chavez, Spinks, Hearns, Holmes, McCallum, Pedroza, Chang, Tyson.

Depends on what your criteria is really. Some compiled better resumes but weren't as dominant and vice versa. Some only fought a part of the decade but accomplished a lot in that time etc. Some looked brilliant and unbeatable for a portion of time, others were steady throughout all the decade etc.
