Heavyweights are tricky because they have really gotten huge and while there is diminishing return, size does matter , especially in stylistic match ups and if you're actually going to rate men from 188 or so to say 250 all time as heavyweights there should be a P4P and a H to H .. that said , guys that intrigue me ..

I'll start w Usyk as he's current ... I feel his rematch performance against a motivated and trained Joshua was exceptional ... in my opinion that Usyk beats any Fury who's bravery and charisma greatly supersede his performances over questionable opposition ... By the time he actually fights Fury his inactivity ( two fights in three years ) and age 37 may bring him down to a sloppy decision loss in an ugly Fury lean/hugathon but no doubt Usky is/was a great fighter.

Jack Sharkey always intrigues me. Inconsistent and a basket case, at his best in the mid the later 20's he was brave as hell and a terrific fighter .. speed, skill, chin and condition ...

Joe Frazier, today highly underrated , without doubt a top five P4P heavyweight ... very small, sight impaired, what he accomplished as a tiny swarmer was astonishing ...

Dempsey ... without talking it to death again he may have had the skill to be a cruiserweight version of a Duran or a Manny Paq but his inactivity post title winning victory leaves too many question marks for me ...

    More to come ..

Sam Langford , possibly the greatest P4P fighter that ever lived ... at 5' 6" its amazing that a man that fought prime Joe Gans and Joe Walcott was ultimately feared as at heavyweight but such was the fighter ... I see him as a better conditioned Qwai with much more two handed power ...

Jack Johnson ... fascinating to see him brushed aside as a one trick pony that feasted on single shot punchers from the stone age which I find as accurate as the assumption that he only fought short men based on the existing Ketchel and Burns footage ... I see Johnson , with his exceptional ring IQ, speed, natural strength, timing and conditioning in the forefront of fighters like Whitaker, Hopkins, Mayweather and Ward, men that knew how to move in-between gears and made other looks look lost. A very rare exceptional athlete that would have been exceptional in any era ...

I agree. And while I am a big admirer of his, I am not necessarily a big fan of his style. I do rank him as the greatest light heavyweight of all time.

He used to work on the door of a nightclub in Liverpool, usually wearing a white tuxedo. I’d go and have a chat with him, did so a few times. I doubt most people had any idea who he was, or what it would mean to be on the end of that right hand (!)

I nearly picked Dokes and Bert Cooper too….loved Coopers brawl with Moorer and his demolition of Cecil Coffee. And same on Dokes…I thought he could’ve achieved so much more, always good to watch.

Awesome, was this a rough area of Liverpool or a more posh one? I think it would be foolish for people to pick a fight with an old man thinking it would be easy.

I got to have lunch with Earnie several years ago. He was passing through and was going with a group and I got a call to come join. His fist was the size of a sledgehammer and I’m 100% sure he could have taken me with one shot even at his age.

It was in the city center, not rough but plenty of weekend revellers.

Some of these names I see make top tens most often than not. Dempsey or Johnson are mostly found there.
