Burt, I respect you as a poster, but there is no stick that can kill Afro-Hulk Walcott. He had the skin of a Triceratops.
Over the course of 22 months, Leonard knocked off three Hall of Famers and a fourth lineal champion in a higher weight class that had a combined record of 178-1-1 at the time he beat them. This doesnt even include taking Hagler's lineal middleweight crown or Lalonde at super middleweight. I'm not arguing he's top three (I have him 8th) but yeah, thats pretty ****in incredible.
Its surprising to me that Willie Pep doesnt get as much love on this forum than you would expect. Being a classic fighter that looks ridiculously exceptional on film. Robinson, Armstrong, Ali and Pep were the four names i'd hear when people were discussig the greatest. Pep misses out of alot of people's top 10's on ESB. And guys like Duran, Charles, B Leonard, Ross, are regularly ranked above him Any insight as to why?
Ray Leonard had one of the greatest quality of opposition in history, that plus his Hd 2 Hd ability, is why I rate him so high, he one of the most underrated on ESB, in terms of rating. I would have Whitaker even higher if it was just purely Hd 2 Hd whats your top 15 ?
Benny Leonard's quality of opposition does it for me, probably the best among all lightweights, Ezzard Charles beat a wide range of hall of famers fron middle to heavyweight including Archie Moore no fewer than three times and the heavily avoided Charles Burley twice. Duran was the only man to beat a prime Ray Leonard and outside of his natural weight class, which he thoroughly dominated. And even in the alphabet soup and vast multiple "champions" of modern boxing, hes still the only lightweight champ to take a portion of the middleweight crown.
Greb SRR Langford Armstrong Fitzsimmons Charles Pep Duran Ross Walker Ali B. Leonard A. Moore R. Leonard Whitaker Was slightly different the 1st time I made one....
1. Armstrong 2. Langford 3. Greb 4. SRR 5. Duran 6. Fitz 7. E. Charles 8. Whitaker 9. Joe Walcott (Berbados) 10. Pep 11. Walker 12. Leonard 13. SRL 14. Ross 15. A. Moore
Few things say P4P King quite like simultaneously owning three world titles and possibly being jobbed out of a fourth in a game that at the time, housed 8 divisions. Armstrong could very well be GOAT, but Im ultimately even more blown away by Langford dropping every top rated heavyweight who would meet him in the ring in addition to earlier wins over slam dunk ATGs.
The most exceptional fighter he met beat him up. It sits poorly with some people I think (regardless of the details). It's like trying to rate Ali if Frazier had beaten him a bunch of times. It gets confusing, however he looks on film.
