I’ll kick it off Liston....I used to under rate the hell out of him solely based on the Ali fights...was I wrong. Man was an absolute beast. Mayweather in this forum he basically losses every h2h against every ATG...for a guy that was the best at hitting and not being hit I find that hard to believe. Marciano another man that losses every h2h because of his height and weight yet never lost nor failed to kayo anyone above 200, had power in both hands and amazing endurance and a great chin yet losses every time.
Public/Casually: 1. Larry Holmes 2. Mikey Garcia 3. Joe Louis This forum: 1. Max Baer 2. John L Sullivan 3. Sugar Ray Leonard
Mike McCallum is one he would have pushed any of the fab four all the way or maybe beaten them but the only one people seem to pick him against is Duran because of his losses at light middle and 160, some say he would have beat Hearns but mostly people go on about hiim being outboxed by Curry until that hook landed and him losing the first fight to Kalambay and the split decision win over the awkward highly mobile Graham, his KO over Jackson has even been played down. GGG is underrated I feel he was one of the best middleweights in history and two of hios best opponents are underrated too meaning his resume is underated, he`s given no credit for his two performances v Canelo who is also underrated and no credit for beaten Jacobs who is the third guy on my list unless he loses to Canelo and I bet if Canelo beats him that will be an underrated win also.
1. Pedroza RIP Campeon 2. Alan Minter. A terrific fighter defined by 2 late career losses 3. Saad Muhammad. Would have knocked out Braxton & Spinks in his prime.
It’s funny in general how some fighters like Marciano GGG or Holmes can be perceived as Underrated or over rated depending on whom you ask. I personally have a hard time rating 1930s and below fighters as footage is poor and styles were so different...some styles like Louis and Tunney and Dempsey to a point would do fine today imo but others I feel would struggle.
I def think Charles was underated as a HW but like Holyfield maybe fought too long piling up the losses. He’s a guy I don’t see many posting h2h matchups.
Its BECAUSE so many people both underrate and overrate Marciano and Holmes that i didnt list either (for this forum). In public regard i feel both are underrated, on this forum id say Marciano is slightly underrated, then again it could be argued that i simply overrate him. Still dunno how people rank him below anybody not named "Louis" or "Ali" at heavyweight. Man owns many records and had a terrific dominance streak over better competition than what many think I didnt really like your explanation because i feel that Marciano wins plenty of H2H matchups for the majority of users, usually its the same Seamus/GPC/KoolKevin that drop in and say "nah too small" with Pat M liking their comments.
He definitely fought for too long, more like Jones than Holyfeild tho, coz up until Holyfeild's retirement he fought decent opposition, Jones and Charles just lost to people they shouldn't have ever lost to. Im not sure if there's a real reason for it, or if he just didn't want to hang them up
