Marvin hagler: greatest middleweight all time, powerful, versatile, tricky and about impossible to hurt, great lunger too. Max baer: y'all forget what a pure juggernaught baer was, had a great overhand too. Gerald mcclellan: I get his career was cut short and he didn't have an uppercut in his arsenal, but from he did display alot in that short span, man had a iron chin, punched like a heavyweight and had great footwork and was the best body puncher all time. Hadn't been for that brain clot he would have been considered a ATG.
I really thought Holmes had a good chance of beating BHOP when they fought. Man was I wrong. He was a big middleweight that was pretty skilled. Inactivity really hurt his career.
In the past I was guilty of underrating Fenech. But the great poster John Thomas educated me with some brilliant points
I was there too I was with Quincy Yes he was knocked down but he got up & was OK Holmes attacked thinking Quincy was badly hurt Quincy wasn't getting hit most missed & he blocked the others when Richard Steele stopped the fight. The reason Holmes won was he was managed by Don King's stepson Carl. Steele was King's ref Bernard Hopkins was on the same card he said " You got robbed man You & me are the best Middleweights we need to get it on " "If you don't get a rematch I;ll kick Holmes ass for you" He kept his word too
I agree the stoppage was a little premature. But, the knockdown was pretty hard, and Holmes was all over Quincy after he got up. Are you just friends with Quincy,? Or were you in his camp? We must have been within 20 feet of each other. Almost nobody was there yet. Such a travesty that nobody would come to these amazing undercards like that. I was almost as excited about Holmes-Taylor as the main event.
At that time I practically lived at Dave Gormans Super Pro's gym in Ft Worth & Curtis Cokes Home of Champions gym in Dallas Got to know lot of the guys there Curry, Hatcher, Cruz , Quincy , Ike Ibeabuchi Paulie Ayala kirk Johnson etc' had some great times. Yeah the place was empty such a damn shame. King promised Quincy a rematch so he signed with him but he never fought again for years ruined his career
Taylor was a hell of a fighter. Dude could crack for sure. Good middleweights in those days with the DC guys (Joppy, Holmes), Taylor, Echols, Allen and of course BHop.
That sucks about Quincy. He was a solid fighter who never seemed to get the right breaks. I read somewhere that he used to give Sugar Ray Leonard hell in sparring. I am envious you got t9 spend time with all those great fighters. Looking forward to hopefully meeting Curry at the IBHOF in June.
He actually KO'd Leonard sparring LOL Ray was still on his feet the ropes holding him up. Ray wouldn't spar him again. Don is a great guy hope you do get to meet him His induction was wayyy overdue
It's hard to call well-known fightera underrated or overrated. Ezzard Charles was underrated for decades. Now it's difficult to say that he's underrated because people appreciate his achievements. The truly underrated fighters are the ones that still remain forgotten.
Thanks for educating me on Wes Ramey. Clearly one of those long forgotten fighters - I didn't know about him at all!
