i dont have a top 5 i like alot of fighters but ill name five i really admire

would of liked to of put jack kid berg on my list but hardly seen any film of him ,and dont feel anyone can make my list just from what i have read.salvador sanchez,jc chavez and arguello just miss out

 

1. Robinson ... surprised he wasn't on more lists.
2. Ali ... this man, hate him, love him, was inspiring.
3. Marciano ... spirit, smarts, class.
4. LaMotta ... still in awe of his toughness.
5. Pacquiao ... heart!

What's great about this topic is the big number of pairs of fighters that were big rivals in their careers and on the same lists by so many contributors.

 

Jeez,in my second ten,I forgot Monzon and Jones.Too many pints last night.Should've just widened the list.

Sorry Robbi, I know you very specifically wanted 5, and in order, but I find that impossible.

I'll just list a few and the reasons why:

- I owe Mike a great debt. It was he who rejuvenated my interest in the best sport in the world when my interest was at it's all-time lowest. From the moment he thundered onto the scene I knew I was watching something special. I'll always have a soft spot for the man, despite his many faults.

- Despite almost everyone telling him he couldn't be a good fighter, Rock proved them all wrong and became a legendary fighter. When I think of pure grit and limitless will, I think of Rocky.
He came across as a simple man, but he was actually a deeply complex individual.

- What can I say? Such a humble and truly nice man; a real gentleman. His slashing combinations and knockout power in either hand make him easily one of my favourites.

- His career was on the path to nowhere before he found a right hand from seemingly nowhere and flattened Hearns. Despite his limitations as a fighter, he carved out a more than respectable career. An overachiever.

- You can keep your Robinsons, your Peps and your Whitakers, Coop's my man. I'll never forget that gnomish face smiling through a film of blood as Holyfield used his countenance for target practice. The smoke was no joke. People like Cooper are the salt of the earth. Yeah, I'm a sucker for hard luck stories.

I don't know if it was the shaven skull, the glare or the goatee, but Hagler had a look that said 'don't mess with me.' His skills were sublime. A warrior born and a fighter bred. The ultimate pro.

- That right hand and jab can stand with the best of them. A beast of a fighter, really. If he were blessed with an iron chin, he'd have been unstoppable. He gave me some of my fondest memories from the 80's, and he's one of the nicest guys ever. One of the most gracious losers as well, which is rare in an athlete of such caliber.

- the man of steel. Another example of great mental and physical fortitude, although he certainly had good skills. A fighter in every sense of the word.

- I admit a touch of shallowness here - I just fell in love with Jackson's awesome power. He wasn't a bad technician actually, but I loved watching those vicious knockouts. There is something so visceral and exciting about watching a fighter that can take your head off with one clout.

- A relentless stalker that put amazing pressure on a man. Those left hooks to the body were something to behold. It was slightly disappointing to see that Chavez was a sore loser sometimes, but I guess a man with such a deeply competitive spirit is always going to find it hard to accept second best.

- Another fighter who was a gentleman outside the ring, but an uncompromising warrior inside the squared circle. I'd have loved to see him square off against Chavez at 130.

- I just put these two together because I can't think of the one without the other. Both excellent fighters that to me epitomise everything that's good about Mexican fighters.

- The ying to Pep's yang. (That sounds bad.)
Highly skilled but with a sociopath's instincts and knockout power.

- He's not on this list because of sentimentality. He truly was a joy to watch - almost like a smaller version of Joe Louis, if you know what I mean. Alexis was one of those guys you know would be an utter pleasure to meet in person too.

Of the active fighters, I like Manny Pacquiao and Cotto quite a bit. I just don't get the chance to see as much as I'd like of the modern fighters. That one fighter, Jorge Linares, looked pretty interesting but I've only ever seen one fight and I have not had the chance to see more. I also was very fond of Diego Corrales as a fighter. What a warrior.

I suppose from my list one could assume that I like fighters who actively look to engage and take their man out of there, and that's true.
But as a fan of the sport I like just watching boxing, period. The smooth stylists, the limited brawlers, the high energy swarmers, the snipers...it's all good. It's all part of why I love this sport.

But as McGrain said, there are many others that make you swear out loud for forgetting them. I just forgot the man in my avatar and no doubt many others too.

You know what's wierd? Despite the fact that I should in theory adore him, I've never really taken to Duran. There's a disconnect somewhere that I can't put my finger on. Strange.

Yeah he would fit into your list pretty well. But sometimes things are as such. I think why i like him so much is a combination of the hard luck story and i find him unique as a character.
