It's Calzaghe fans like you who give Cal a bad name and also create threads like this because you know that as good as Cal is, Floyd was better. There is no such thing as cherry picking when it comes to guys like Floyd or fighters on his level. It comes down to money when you get to their status. Guys like Sugar Leonard and others who were accused of this have paid their dues. When Calzaghe goes to cruiser and then heavy and wins a title, then you can compare him to Floyd. Floyd rose from 130 to 154 and won titles...what has Cal done that comes even close?
Floyd didn't have to fight the top guys at 147. He did that at 130. Floyd beat the most relevant guy at 147. At 154 during that time, we didn't know who was the best at 154 when Floyd fought Dlh. Dlh was one of the best at 154. When guys rise up in weight, they don't usually fight the champ and then 3 or 4 of the contenders in that weight class and then keep moving up. They take on the best. Floyd did that at 130 and 135. He didn't get the Cotto or Kostya fights at 140, and when he was fighting at 147, there was no best, just contenders. He fought the most relevant guy.
He sure was after KOing Jones and beating Tarver, two things Calzaghe has never done. They don't just give Fighter of the Year to anyone. JC ducked him THREE TIMES.
First off Taylor is no cherry picker. The dude fought BHop twice, Winky Wright, Pavlik Twice (including an immediate rematch after getting ktfo) and Corey Spinks who granted is a lighthanded snoozer, but he is a stylistic nightmare for most. Mayweather may have cherry picked when he moved up to 147 and 154, but he did beat the guys at 130 and 137. Maybe you should go back more than a few years and check Mayweather's career before you open your mouth. As for alltime cherrypickers, your avatar says it all. #1 Joe Calzaghe - I will give him credit for the Kessler win. I will also give him some credit for the BHop win even though it was a horrible style match for a 43 year old hopkins. I will in NO way give him any credit for beating a washed up Jones Jr. I think it detracts from him that he didn't knock Jones out. #2 Ricky Hatton - Finally decided to chuck his "0" for the millions to get his ass ktfo by Mayweather. Somewhere the British fans are still singing. #3 JCC Jr. - Time to step up the competition kiddo. (Probably too young to really put on this list, but is anyone else tired of him riding on his father's name?) Edited for Spelling
How the **** did he cherrypick!!????. He cleaned out his division and when he did move up he beat the man. You can criticise him for staying on his arse and fighting nobody's if you really want to hate, but thats not CHERRYPICKING.
Is there a rule saying Calzaghe must be added to all threads. He unified then fought the best in the division when he did finally move. What cherry's were picked? It's on threads like these that the haters are worse than the nuthuggers, I look forward to seeing him brought up in a thread about the best black orthodox american power-puncher in the history of the game.
Fighting nobodies and dodging better competition is indeed cherry-picking. I'm not sure you understand the term.
My understanding of the term is fine thank you, maybe you need to be re-educated. Moving through divisions only fighting the weakest champs to pick up belts= cherypicking Ditching belts to avoid mandatory's that pose a risk = cherrypicking Competing in a division for a length of time and never facing the No.1/lineal/Ring No.1 (whatever one you like) = cherrypicking Not cherrypicking- Cleaning out a division, making 20 defenses and when moving up challenging the No.1/Ring No.1 He can be criticised for fighting at home too long and not moving up sooner if you have to hate, but thats got **** all to do with this thread. Not remotely can he be said to be a cherrypicker. The only name people can even accusehim of ducking is Johnson, and the fight was made twice(Once more than Diaconu-Dawson) and for resons well documented Calzaghe pulled out, but he didnt vacate, Johnson went elsewhere. Even if this reflects badly on Calzaghe, so what, One name in 46 fights and 15 years. Not bad.
