No not quite that old,the first fight I saw live and close up was Cooper v Mildenberger, but I used to watch the Saturday fights from the US in the 60's.
No argument saying McCallum was better than our UK quartet, but he doesn't fit the criteria.I'm not that confident about my list,I may easily have gotten the French/Belgian guys in the wrong order.
Algeria isn't ,and never has been, its part of the African continent in fact its the largest country in the continent of Africa! "Algeria is Africa’s largest country with a total area of 919,595 mi 2. It is found in the northern region of the African continent. The country borders the Mediterranean Sea , Niger , Mali , Mauritania , Western Sahara , Morocco, Libya , and Tunisia ." I'm getting a trifle tired of this. Want to go for a £1000 bet?
As a matter of interest, Fleischer & Loubet's Pictorial History of Boxing, which was for decades viewed as the sport's definitive anthology, credits Bob Fitzsimmons as Cornish. Born in Helston.
Yes,he was born in Helston in either no 61Wendron street , where their is plaque commemorating it,or Cade's Yard, a few yards away .The plaque misspells Fitzsimmons name, using only one M.There are photos of both the plaque and the house in Gilbert Odd's book of Fitz," The Fighting Blacksmith."Fitzsimmons lived in Grey Road Timaru New Zealand when his family emigrated there, the is also a photo of that in Odd's book and one of the Forge ,where Bob worked for his older brother Jarret.
Looking at the UK Middles of the 80s/90s, I found Graham to be the only one with a chance of being in the top 10, within the criteria. Graham has the best win (Kalambay) in my opinion and he ran McCallum very close. Benn and Eubank prop each other up to a certain extent, with Benn edging Eubank, with his win over Barkley. Watson, quite tragically failed to reap the spoils of his efforts, from which, had things gone another way, he could have gone on to claim supremacy over the British Middleweight scene.
I might have overated both Benn and Eubank as has been said they don't have many scalps at160lbs. For example Humez has wins over Dauthille Langloisx2 Mitri x2 Scholz Panter Langlois over Giardello Castellani Delanoitt over Cerdan Dauthille x2 Tunero
Indeed - and, on top of that, I just realized that my memory has failed me, since Herol Graham didn't beat Kalambay. He lost to him - twice. For some reason I had thought he'd won one of those encounters. Time for a rethink...
Benn perhaps stands a chance, given my mis-memory over Graham (although Sibbo and even Minter himself perhaps deserve a look). Back to the drawing board on that one. I need to look more closely at Humez and Langois, both of whom I did not include in my initial list. In particular, the quality of these wins for Humez: Mitri x2 Scholz Panter More study required...
