Thinking about it... ...other than Fitzsimmons and Turpin, Minter looks the better, amongst the rest of the British Middleweights.
I just think Benn stepped out of his comfort zone. Went to the States stopped Barkley and DeWitt. The McClellan win is somewhat tainted but Benn had to go through hell to come back and win that. Drew the 2nd fight with Eubank which many thought he deserved to win.
I already put that in detail, Mcvey remains a cancerous moron. I never meet a historian or serious boxing fan that doesn't think Cerdan wasn't French.
That's not how boxing works. Marciano for example was Italian, yet he wasn't born in Italy. A dog can be born in a stable, it doesn't make him a horse. Also I bet few knew where Cerdan was born and had to look it up.
He was an American of Italian heritage. So he was regarded at the time as the Italian heavyweight champion of the world?
These are factors, which cannot be ignored, where Benn is concerned. He really was a warrior. I actually think he was a better SMW than he was a MW. However, while I was tempted to consider his SMW exploits for this listing (including what I thought, at the time, would be a nod for him, in the Eubank rematch), I have resisted doing so. It is also worth considering that Minter took himself out of his comfort zone, as well - winning the EBU Title in Italy; defending and losing it in Italy; regaining the title in Italy. He won the world title in Vegas, taking it from Antuofermo (and winning the rematch in the UK). He also has wins over Finnegan, Seales, Licata, Tonna and, despite losing to Hamsho, nearing the end of his career, Minter put in a solid effort - again, over in the US. If it's between Benn and Minter, I think Minter pips it, for mine.
Marciano was American, born in the US,of Italian parentage.Cerdan was born on the continent of Africa hence he does not qualify for inclusion here. If a poster made a thread about the top ten Italian champs would Marciano qualify? It wouldn't matter where you were born, you would still be a **** !lol
That's all fair comment, there is a strong case for Minter. You've also highlighted the fact I've put 2 of Benn's fights at Super Middle in the mix!! My list was always fluid and after reading this post and others I may have to adjust!
Likewise, I noticed you had Thil quite high up on your list (3?), in comparison to where I had him on mine (8). I've taken another look at his record and have moved Thil up four places to number 4 on my list. I'm now considering Humez at the lower-end on the list. So, things are currently looking like: 1. Bob Fitzsimmons 2. Nino Benvenuti 3. Randolph Turpin 4. Marcel Thil 5. Robert Villemain 6. Alan Minter 7. Vince Dundee 8. Vito Antuofermo 9. Cyrille Delannoit 10. Charles Humez This is not final, but I think it's probably better than the first effort.
The op is a know idiot. Maybe I could start a thread the best British heavyweight who fought for their nation in the Olympics. Cerdan was a proud Frenchmen who won the middle weight championship of France and joined the allies in World War Two to fight against the nazi’s . To most Cerdan is the best French boxer of all time.
Cerdan had 54 of his 114 fights in Africa. You can start a thread on what you like, but I guarantee that, however short it is,it will have at least two spelling mistakes in it !lol
