Your top ten of fighters that could make this weight, champions and non champions who could give prime performances whilst inside the LHVy limit. In no order Ezzard Charles Gene Tunney Archie Moore Sam Langford Bob Foster Harry Greb Mike Spinks Billy Conn Tommy Loughran Roy Jones Jnr . Just thinking about the wealth of talent there is among those that could operate inside 175lbs and that is leaving out guys like; Bob Fitzsimmons Jack Delaney Saad Muhammad Mustapha Muhammad Victor Galindez Maxie Rosenbloom Harold Johnson Dwight Muhammad John Henry Lewis John Conteh Paul Berlenbach Jimmy Bivins Kid Norfolk Lloyd Marshall Tiger Jack Fox An abundance of talent!
Hi buddy. Well your list or both lists, has pretty much closed down the contenders I can't think of any other 175 lbs outside of, Slattery, Pops, Carpentier, what would intrigue me is your definitive top 10, so from your 1 to 10. stay safe amigo.
10 - Matthew Saad Muhammad 09 - Jimmy Bivins 08 - Bob Foster 07 - John Henry Lewis 06 - Tommy Loughran 05 - Mike Spinks 04 - Gene Tunney 03 - Harry Greb 02 - Archie Moore 01 - Ezzard Charles
Based solely on fights contested in & around LHW (e.g. where both fighters weighed under 180lbs in a non-title contests, which seems better attributed to LHW than HW to me) and completely ignoring all fights contested in other weight divisions, my top 9 are a lock for the top 10, imo, though I'm not comfortable with some of the ordering: 1. Charles 2. Greb 3. Tunney 4. JH Lewis (good example of a fighter whose LHW ranking benefits from my criteria, unbeaten in fights contested under 180lbs, he lost to fighters weighing under 180lbs whilst he weighed over it, e.g. he went 2-3 vs Rosenbloom, but only 2-0 at LHW by my criteria) 5. Spinks 6. Moore (I know I rank him lower thank just about everyone & on win resume alone he's arguably 1, but he has 9 losses at the weight within the time period he was accumulating his incredible win resume. I need to reassess though, it's more likely that I'm wrong than everyone else is, so I probably have him too low). 7. Foster 8. Bivins 9. Loughran Whilst there are others with better LHW resumes, I have RJJ @ 10, on the basis of the 1-sided nature of his wins over very good LHWs like Hill & Griffin (rematch), they hint at a fighter who was seriously good at the weight, even if he doesn't have the depth of quality wins as the likes of my #11-14 (T. Gibbons, Delaney, Muhammed & Johnson), any/all of whom I could see above RJJ if I took another look at my same notes, on a different day. By my criteria, Fitzsimmons had too few fights contested at LHW and a lot of the good work Conn did whilst weighing under 180lbs was actually in fights contested at HW, so contribute to my appraisal of him at HW & P4P, but not at LHW (where I rank him #17).
Damn good list! I get the Fitz problem but how many times was he over 175lbs ? A similar thing applies to a fit Langford imo ,whom Clay Moyle his biographer stated was at his best at 175 /180 lbs.
As mentioned, my criteria when ranking a fighter in a weight division is to only factor in fights contested in that weight division. e.g. Fitzsimmons was 170lbs vs the 260lbs Ed Dunkhorst. This was a fight contested at HW, so contributes to Fitzsimmons HW resume & P4P ranking, but is not part of his LHW, by my criteria, even though Bob weighed 170lbs. My criteria isn't definitive, but it enables me to ensure each fight only contributes once to a fighters divisional ranking, specifically to the weight division the fight was contested in.
Each to their own,or as Hemingway said when accepting his Nobel Prize for Literature via telephone link, "there is no need to list these great writers ,each man must make his own list according to his conscience/" or something like that.
#1 Charles #2 Spinks #3Moore #4Foster #5 Franklin (Saad Mohamed) #6 Gregory (Mustafa Mohamed) #7 Braxton (Qawi) #8Bivins #9 Jones Jr. #10Hill Fighters I've actually watched multiple times against multiple different opponents . Have a pretty good feeling about what they could and could not do.
Hmm 1) Ezzard Charles 2) Archie Moore 3) Gene Tunney 4) Harry Greb 5) Tommy Loughran 6) Michael Spinks 7) Harold Johnson 8) Jimmy Bivins 9) Bob Foster 10) Roy Jones Had a hard time leaving off Conn and or Maxim for Jones at the end…
I like your list. 9 of your 10 appear on my 10. The only fighter on my list that isn't on yours, is John Henry Lewis. He was 50-0-3 in fights contested at & around LHW, 6-0 in lineal title fights and beat Rosenbloom x 2, Tiger Jack Fox, Al Gainer x 2, Tony Shucco x 2, Bob Olin x 3, Bob Godwin, Jock Mcavoy, Len Harvey, Lou Scozza and Fred Lenhart. Incredible record.
Arguably even 9. I couldn't see Foster, Loughran or Bivins, who between them comprise our #8 & #9, outside a 10, if only fights contested at or around LHW is the guiding criteria. I could see 5 fighters at #10, though.
I still feel Harold Johnson is the most underrated fighter in BF24. He should be a lock in this category imo.
