Seeing some including Fitzie Zivic in their twenty I'm curious as to which names make posters lists. Here is a rough draft of mine in no order . Champions only. McLarnin Britton Lewis Robinson Napoles Griffith Gavilan Walker DeLaHoya Ross Armstrong Whitaker Mayweather Pacquiano Trinidad Mosley Leonard Hearns Duran Rodriguez
20 - Roberto Duran 19 - Felix Trinidad 18 - Luis Manuel Rodriguez 17 - Curtis Cokes 16 - Jimmy McLarnin 15 - Barney Ross 14 - Mickey Walker 13 - Jackie Fields 12 - Joe Walcott 11 - Tommy Ryan 10 - Ted Kid Lewis 09 - Floyd Mayweather 08 - Tommy Hearns 07 - Kid Gavilan 06 - Henry Armstrong 05 - Emile Griffith 04 - Jose Napoles 03 - Jack Britton 02 - Ray Leonard 01 - Sugar Ray
I can do a top ten very confidently. The next ten I'll have to be a bit less confident on. Just as a preface I rank on one thing and one thing only: winnability. I also only rank a fighter in one division, the one I think which best represents them as a fighting machine. My confident top ten: Ray Robinson Ray Leonard Thomas Hearns Jose Napoles Floyd Mayweather Charley Burley Kid Gavilan Emile Griffith Luis Manuel Rodriguez Oscar De La Hoya My not so confident next ten (reverse chronological order): Forrest Trinidad Curry Palomino Cuevas Honeyghan Basilio McClarnin Zivic Walker This has made me rethink some things. I can't believe I don't have McClarnin, Tito or Walker in my top 100 fighters. Something has to change there. But that's my list as of now. Might change over the next day or so whilst I rethink some things.
Then drop Burley and replace him with Starling. I must say, this thread, for some reason, has reignited my passion a bit with boxing. Just done a list of about 30 great fighters I haven't currently ranked. That's gonna be some boxing to watch over the next few weeks. So thanks.
I feel Buddy McGirt might have beaten Honeyghan and Starling proved he had a low ring IQ plus an awful corner, Mickey Duff to Lloyd near the end of his awful display v Starling missing 75% of his non-stop punches: 'Are you tired Lloyd'!
Basilio was far better than Honeyghan, he managed to beat Robi at middle and Lloyd would have been destroyed by Robi at welter, plus he faced Gavilan who would have also toyed with Lloyd.
My top 20: 1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Sugar Ray Leonard 3. Jose Napoles 4. Henry Armstrong 5. Kid Gavilan 6. Emile Griffith 7. Mickey Walker 8. Jack Britton 9. Barbados Joe Walcott 10. Barney Ross 11. Thomas Hearns 12. Ted Kid Lewis 13. Luis Rodriguez 14. Carmen Basilio 15. Jimmy McLarnin 16. Curtis Cokes 17. Roberto Duran 18. Felix Trinidad 19. Tommy Ryan 20. Pernell Whitaker 1-10 I'm pretty happy with - although I came very close to putting Napoles at no.2 - but 11-20 I could probably tweak more.
