that, my friend, is the stuff dreams are made of. you hear people fantasize about that fight often, but it gets me every time someone bangs the drum again. the public forgets, because both guys got the most press in europe and the states for fights outside their best weight (lightweight for both) that chavez and duran were both deceptively hard to hit, good defenders in close quarters and surprisingly quick at 135. man, i would love to see it. i think duran is a top 3 all-time lightweight. at 135, man, whew he was a thing of unknown vicious and graceful proportions. if anybody within a stone's throw of his era coud find a way to bring the fight to him and win it would be chavez who, at lightweight, had this great way of slowly working one side of the fighter more and more as he came forward and then, bang, when the guy turned to try to counter he'd fire a big shot and catch him in the middle of the transition. i think duran takes this one, but it goes the distance hard and competitive.
the 1986 version of tyson vs riddick bowe of lets say 1990. tito vs mosley at 154. bhop vs the james toney that just beat michael nunn. ike ibuchea vs tyson 1986.
yep. I get the chills when i think about this one. Both underrated skills, and both have that "pride" of never wanting to be defeated. I have duran too i just think hes a bit better than julio.
I was just noticing that everyone chooses the 1986 Mike Tyson. Wouldnt his best years be 1988-89 considering he was into his mid 20's and gaining experience as well as adding up the KO's and names on his resume as he defended the HW Title? He didnt lose to Douglas until 1990, and had Kevin Rooney through most of 1988 I believe.
